Mette Bjerknæs

Mette Brandt Bjerknæs (born 22 January 1989) is a Norwegian powerboat racer competing in the UIM Formula 2 World Championship. She races for JRM Racing and is also involved with the UIM E1 World Championship, the all-electric international powerboat racing series. She is regarded as one of the most successful female competitors in modern international powerboat racing and became the first woman to win the UIM Endurance Class S2 World Championship in 2014.

Early life

Bjerknæs was born in Norway and grew up in a family involved in powerboat racing. Her father, Morten Bjerknæs, competed in Formula 1 powerboat racing, while her mother, Lene Bjerknæs, raced in the V-25 class. Inspired by motorsport from an early age, she began her own racing career in 2008 in the V-25 category.

Racing career Formula 2

Bjerknæs made her debut in the UIM Formula 2 World Championship in 2010. Early successes included victories at the Tvedestrand Grand Prix and Drammen Grand Prix, together with strong performances in Scandinavian and Nordic competition. She achieved third place in the Norwegian Formula 2 Championship in 2011.

Over the following decade she established herself as a regular competitor in the UIM Formula 2 World Championship. Her championship results have included:

11th in the 2021 UIM Formula 2 World Championship 15th in the 2022 UIM Formula 2 World Championship 9th in the 2023 UIM Formula 2 World Championship

She won the 2021 Formula 2 British Sprint Championship and set the Formula 2 lap record at Oulton Broad in the same year.

Endurance Racing

In 2014 Bjerknæs became UIM Endurance Class S2 World Champion, a landmark achievement that made her the first female driver to win the title. Racing with Navikart Racing, she secured championship success through a combination of race victories and podium finishes across the season.

E1 World Championship

Alongside her Formula 2 activities, Bjerknæs has become involved with the UIM E1 World Championship, the international all-electric powerboat racing series founded by Rodi Basso and Alejandro Agag. E1 features mixed-gender pilot line-ups competing in the RaceBird electric powerboat and is focused on marine innovation and sustainable motorsport.

JRM Racing

Bjerknæs co-founded JRM Racing with British racer and team manager Jamey Stallard. The team competes internationally in Formula 2 powerboat racing and has become one of the leading independent teams in the championship.

Personal life

Originally from Norway, Bjerknæs later relocated to England and is based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. In addition to her racing career, she has worked as a teacher and entrepreneur. She holds academic qualifications in marketing, economics, entrepreneurship and travel business studies.
