Nordic Pulse Orchestra (NPO) is an artist collective founded in 2021 by conductor Kristjan Järvi. The ensemble brings together musicians from classical, electronic, contemporary and interdisciplinary artistic backgrounds, combining orchestral performance with elements of improvisation, electronic music, multimedia production and immersive concert design.

The orchestra operates in collaboration with Sunbeam Productions, which develops and produces many of its concerts, festivals and audiovisual projects.

History

Nordic Pulse Orchestra was established in 2021 as a musician-led collective. The ensemble emerged from artistic collaborations developed through Kristjan Järvi's earlier projects and reflects influences from genre-crossing orchestral initiatives such as Absolute Ensemble and the Baltic Sea Philharmonic.

From its inception, the orchestra has focused on collaborative creation, encouraging musicians to contribute not only as performers but also as composers, arrangers, producers and creative partners. The ensemble's projects often combine classical repertoire with contemporary composition, electronic music and site-specific performance concepts.

Artistic Approach

Nordic Pulse Orchestra describes itself as an artist collective. Its artistic work incorporates influences from contemporary classical music, ambient music, electronic production and improvisation.

Many productions combine live music with visual design, lighting, film, movement and environmental elements. Recurring themes in the ensemble's work include nature, human connection, creativity and the relationship between audiences and performers.

The orchestra is associated with Nordic Amazonia, a multidisciplinary cultural initiative. Nordic Amazonia functions as an ecosystem of interconnected artistic, educational and community-based experiences.

The initiative encompasses a range of projects including Nordic Pulse concerts, the Twilight Senses Festival (Meelte Videvik), Nordic Pulse Hotel residencies, nEscapes Lounge events, workshops and collaborative artistic programmes. These projects share common themes related to creativity, praticipation, welbeing, nature and community and community engagement.

According to its creators, Nordic Amazonia is intended to provide multiple points of entry into a shared cultural framework, allowing audiences and participants to engage through performances, retreats, educational activities and immersive experiences. The concept serves as an umbrella structure connecting many of the ensemble's artistic and community-oriented initiatives.

Productions and Projects

Among the ensemble's recurring productions is The Elements, and audiovisual performance inspired by natural forces and featuring music by Kristjan Järvi, members of the ensemble and contemporary composers including Max Richter and Mick Pedaja.

In 2025 the orchestra premiered Arvo Pärt Mirrored and the Pärnu Music Festival. The production explored the music of Arvo Pärt alongside works by composers who influenced him and artists whose work has been shaped by his legacy.

In the same Year, members of Nordic Pulse participated in a large-scale performance at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, continuing the ensemble's involvement in site-specific and interdisciplinary productions in international settings.

A major productions in the ensemble's repertoire is Nordic Pulse RITUAL, an immersive orchestral experience developed in collaboration with electronic musician and composer Jon Hopkins. Premiered at Alexela Concert Hall in Tallinn in December 2025, the production combined orchestral performance, electronic music, visual elements and participatory audience experiences. The project forms part of the ensemble's ongoing exploration of immersive and interdisciplinary concert formats.

The ensemble additionally hosts Nordic Pulse Hotel, a creative residency programme that invites participants to engage directly with the orchestra's artistic process through workshops, jam sessions, discussions and collaborative activities.

Festivals and Events

Nordic Pulse Orchestra together with Kristjan Järvi has its own festival Twiligth Senses Festival (Estonian: Meelte Videvik), an annual multi-art festival that combines music, nature and interdisciplinary artistic experiences in different locations across Estonia.

In April 2026, the ensemble hosted Afterglow, an immersive gathering organised in connection with the International Artist Managers' Association (IAMA) conference in Tallinn.

In May 2026, Nordic Pulse performed at Tallinn Day celebrations in Freedom Square alongside guest artists including nublu, Cartoon and Mari Kalkun as part of the production Nordic Amazonia.

Collaborations

The orchestra's work has involved collaborations with artists, composers and producers from a range of musical backgrounds, including contemporary classical, electronic and pop music.

Musicians associated with the ensemble have performed alongside artists including Brian Eno, Jon Hopkins and Coldplay. Nordic Pulse has also collaborated with composer Nico Muhly and electronic music produces Robot Koch.

The orchestra contributed orchestral recordings to Robot Koch's album The Next Billion Years and has participated in projects that explore connections between orchestral, electronic and cinematic music.

Organisation

Nordic Pulse Orchestra operates as a musician-led colective in which performers, composers, producers and creative collaborators contribute to the development of artistic projects. The ensemble works closely with Sunbeam Productions on the production of concerts, festivals, films, and multimedia projects.

Its activities span concert performance, interdisciplinary productions, creative residencies and festival programming, with a focus on collaboration between artists working across different musical and creative disciplines.
