Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) is a nonprofit, professional and humanitarian organization of physicians and medical professionals of Sudanese descent, most of whom live and work in the United States. It was founded in January 2019 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. It is registered as a 501(c)(3) organization and became tax-exempt in October 2019.[1]
SAPA’s activities center on medical relief, physician training, and humanitarian aid directed toward Sudan, and expanded significantly after the outbreak of the 2023 Sudanese civil war.[2] The organization holds a four out of four star rating from Charity Navigator[3] and is listed as a humanitarian organization by ReliefWeb and the Diaspora Emergency Action and Coordination (DEMAC) network.[4]
In July 2024, SAPA president Yasir Elamin briefed the U.S. Department of State Foreign Press Center on the humanitarian situation in Sudan.[5] SAPA has also collaborated with the Yale School of Public Health on research documenting hospital damage in Khartoum State,[6] and aspects of its work have been referenced in peer-reviewed research published in BMJ Global Health[7] and in a study of a WHO-approved surgical mission published via PMC.[8]

History
Following the outbreak of the 2023 Sudanese civil war[9], SAPA expanded its work inside Sudan as fighting affected Khartoum and other population centers. Its activities have since included mobile medical clinics, hospital rehabilitation projects, and coordination with international organizations to deliver medical supplies to internally displaced persons. In the July 2024 State Department briefing, Elamin described SAPA as operating one of the larger grassroots networks of healthcare professionals active in Sudan.[10]
In December 2024, SAPA and the Yale School of Public Health Humanitarian Research Lab published a joint report using satellite imagery, finding that nearly half of hospitals in Khartoum State had been damaged since the conflict began in April 2023.[11]
Partnerships
SAPA has partnered with a number of international and regional organizations, including UNICEF, the World Health Organization, Project HOPE, Muslim Aid USA, MedGlobal, the Syrian American Medical Society, United Muslim Relief, Penny Canada, Every Casualty Counts and Droplets of Mercy.[12] SAPA is listed as a humanitarian organization by ReliefWeb, a platform affiliated with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and by the DEMAC network.[13]
