Purpose of use

To illustrate a key element of the plot, production, and reception. The shot shows WOTAN (Will Operating Thought ANalogue), the supercomputer which soon seeks to construct War Machines to take over London. The concept of the supercomputer was developed by the academic Kit Pedler in collaboration with story editor Gerry Davis. Several critics considered its use of 1960s telecoms technology to create a network of thinking machines as forward-thinking, predating similar concepts (later a popular trope) in film and television as well as several real technologies like ARPANET and the Internet.
