- ... that as part of an official visit preparation, Malaysian diplomat Fenny Nuli took a 15-hour bus ride with a high kidnapping risk? Source: Lorna, Nura V (30 December 2024). "Resilience, diplomacy, and dedication define her". Sarawak Tribune. Retrieved 23 May 2026.
I recall being a young officer sent to Poland, covering Ukraine. I was tasked with preparing for our then Foreign Minister’s visit and had to go ahead as the advance team—which was just me. This was around 2001 or 2002. It was winter, with heavy snow. I flew to Kyiv and met a Ukrainian representative. The only option was a 15-hour bus ride to Simferopol from Kyiv. I didn’t speak Ukrainian, but I had some help. The journey was in the middle of winter, and I don’t think the bus had a heater. When I finally arrived, the students told me, “You’re brave—taking the bus is risky due to the danger of kidnappings.”

@Jeromi Mikhael: The date, size, spotchecks, etc. all good. QPQ done. But I have a concern about the hook. While the claim repeated in the hook is factually correct (as attested by the quote), it frankly makes little sense. Why did the the students worry about kidnappings? I never heard about kidnappings being a problem in Ukraine in the early 2000s. Frankly, to me this makes about as much sense as telling her she was in danger of abduction by aliens or freezing to death or such. In other words, I don't think we can repeat the claims made by the "Malaysian students" at face value, not without corraobrating evidence. This needs to be reworded in the article, and I don't think we can let such content (IMHO, WP:REDFLAG) appear in the hook; another is needed. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:23, 12 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Piotrus: Hi, thanks for the review! I understand that the claims being made by the hook is a bit mind-boggling, and honestly there's not much source corroborating her claim since it comes from a local newspaper. I could make the hook less bombastic by removing the mention on her alleged possibility of being kidnapped and focusing instead solely on her bus journey.
- ALT1: ... that after her flight was cancelled, Malaysian diplomat Fenny Nuli had to take a 15-hour bus ride in heavy winter snow to Kyiv?
- Regarding the concerns you made on removing the source statement from the article, I don't think that's necessary since I only repeated the student's remark instead of framing it as a fact. Regards, Jeromi Mikhael 01:20, 13 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Jeromi Mikhael: Regarding the tag in the article, I think the " Malaysian students, who later informed her that the journey carried a high risk of kidnapping" sentence needs rewriting, as "informed" suggests neutrality, as in, the sentnece doesn't imply at all that the information given to her is, as you said, "mind-boggling". Here, I think, it makes sense to actually use a term like claimed or suggest or such that implies doubt. As for the hook, how about one based on the claim that she was "the first Iban woman to serve as an ambassador"? That seems (to me) more interesting than a long journey in a bus, which is not that extraordinary (I wager many people in Canada or Russia could say the same, for example). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:15, 14 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Piotrus: I have no problem on that hook, even I initially thought of that, but I shelved it back as I think the DYK folks won't be too receptive of superlative hooks such as the one you proposed. Regards, Jeromi Mikhael 05:41, 14 June 2026 (UTC)

- @Theleekycauldron and Jeromi Mikhael: Jeromi, can you formally proposed a a bolded ALT1 per above, so I can approve it? Otherwise it will be like I am approving my own hook... Ping me when you do. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:20, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Piotrus: Noted. Formally proposing the alternative hook below:
- ALT1: ... that Fenny Nuli is the first Iban woman to serve as an ambassador for Malaysia? Regards, Jeromi Mikhael 02:18, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
Approving ALT1. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:42, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
