James Buchanan Sr.
- ... that James Buchanan's father was the wealthiest man in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania?
- Source: Jean H. Baker writes in James Buchanan (ISBN 978-0-8050-6946-4) that "Buchanan [Sr.] uprooted...to a...home...in Mercersburg... soon [he] was the richest man in town" (pp 11-12).

I withdraw this nomination, realising that this is an exceptional claim and that there are no other claims in the article that are particularly interesting or surprising.Rand Freeman talk ⬩ in solidarity 06:36, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
- @RandFreeman: James Buchanan is currently being reviewed at GA, and I intend on driveby nominating that if it passes. This can easily be bolted on to the front of that hook. Are you sure you want to withdraw?--Launchballer 11:16, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
- Actually, no, @Launchballer. I'll withdraw my withdrawal for now, and wait until the review completes of James Buchanan to see whether this nomination has a chance. Rand Freeman talk ⬩ in solidarity 13:53, 2 June 2026 (UTC)

- In the meantime I've thought up an ALT1: ... that James Buchanan's father died in a carriage accident? Source: Philip Shriver Klein writes in President James Buchanan (can be found at the Internet Archive) that "Buchanan's father died ... when the horse [pulling his carriage] bolted" (p. 37).
But I am not sure how interesting this is, because carriage accidents were far from rare in this time period. Rand Freeman talk ⬩ in solidarity 03:35, 8 June 2026 (UTC)
It's marginally interesting to me, though suggest spelling out that Buchanan was a president. I'll let a reviewer adjudicate. (Note that per my talk page, I won't be nominating the president's article myself, but do watchlist the GA nomination anyway.)--Launchballer 20:14, 9 June 2026 (UTC)

- After giving this some thought, I've modified the link to remove the bold link to President Buchanan. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:07, 26 June 2026 (UTC)
- Methinks linking both, so as to make it clear that James Buchanan Jr. has an article as well, would be better. Having rephrased the hook to avoid an unsightly sea of blue I propose ALT1b: ... that the father of U.S. President James Buchanan died in a carriage accident?
