My Wiki-philosophy

Wikipedia is one of the few sites that still tries to fulfil the vision of the early web that I grew up with. With so many of those early websites either defunct or giving up what made them great for users to increase profitability, Wikipedia has set it self apart by not going down this route and has grown into the largest repository of information that is freely available to anyone anywhere. With the current state of the world it is vitally important that places like Wikipedia exist and that is why I have chosen to contribute after many years of being merely a consumer of information.

That said, Wikipedia is not perfect. Its greatest strength is that anyone can contribute anonymously, allowing insights from people from a range of backgrounds and experiences that would not be possible in other environments, however this is also a weakness in that trolls and bad-faith actors as well as good-faith editors with unconscious biases or who simply make mistakes.

Therefore Wikipedia should be there to provide a basic introduction with plenty of references to be a starting point for research into the topic, not the end point. As such my main focus is improving articles to the point where they can be a useful starting point and I therefore generally prefer spending my time improving stubs and sometimes raising them to Start or C class over focusing on a small number of articles in an attempted to get them to GA.

Current focus and plans

Current priorities:

  • tidy up and improve Burkina Faso geostubs (paused)
  • identify Myanmar geostubs that cannot be conclusively linked to a real place (ongoing)

Future tasks planned:
