In memory of the great 20th-century historical earthquake researcher, from Imperial College, University of London, Prof. Nicholas Ambraseys, or as he was defined in the article on him in the English Wikipedia: "For many years Ambraseys was considered the leading figure and an authority in earthquake engineering and seismology in Europe." I had the honor (during my doctoral studies) of seeing him present at two presentations I gave at the 1996 European Seismological Society conference in Reykjavik, Iceland. Nick Ambraseys passed away in 2012 (His photo is restricted to publication in the Wikipedia article About Him only, due to copyright restrictions. You can watch his photo here).

Another academic research hero is Bailey Willis, an extraordinary American geologist, who happened to be in Cairo at the time of the devastating Jericho earthquake of 1927. He arranged for himself a chartered flight from Cairo to the Holy Land to observe the aftermath of the earthquake. He later arrived in Palestine to witness the destruction up close from the ground, and published an important article about it in 1928 in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.
