Nominator's rationale: After filling categories for 1966-2026, another user continued the categorization I started in order to complete the decade (1965, 1964, etc). However, as outlined in the category explanation I added to the container category Category:Black-and-white films by year, I explicitly set up this categorization in line with the list article List of black-and-white films produced since 1966 because it is described there as the year when black-and-white film tipped the scales. If we categorize every black-and-white film ever made with a "[Year] black-and-white films" category then it won't be a WP:DEFINING intersection. Stated another way, black-and-white was the norm prior to the mid-1960s, so creating year categories for every early black-and-white film would be categorizing them by an intersection that is not defining, resulting in an WP:OVERLAPCAT with the non-diffusing parent "[Year] films" category. Because early films were almost exclusively black-and-white. The purpose is to group films that were made in black-and-white after color had been widely adopted, where the choice of black-and-white is more likely to be a notable and defining aspect of the film. Compare Casablanca (film) and Schindler's List, for example. For that reason, I was trying keep the categorization limited to post-1965 years as originally described unless there is a broader consensus to expand the scope. What do we think? I'm nominating for deletion only as a way to solicit some kind of broader consensus. I admit I'm not too confident in the sourcing at List of black-and-white films produced since 1966, which is lacking and focused moreso on television. I went looking for academic sources about the b&w/color cutoff and came up with mixed results. That list article was moved by Roman Spinner from List of black-and-white films produced since 1970 in 2022. Earlier, it was at List of post-1960s films in black-and-white and List of recent films in black-and-white. Also, the WP:PETSCAN tool tells me black-and-white films released in 1965 account for only ~30% of the articles in Category:1965 films. But then ~60% for the 1960 and 1955 categories. ~80% for the 1950 category. And ~85% for the 1945 cat. So what should be the cutoff, if at all? Worth noting we having categories for 1900s color films to 1940s color films, but no 1950s color films despite color still being the minority in that decade. Οἶδα (talk) 17:04, 1 June 2026 (UTC)
