Chemical elements on number disambiguation pages

I don't think chemical elements should be linked on disambiguation pages for numbers. I can't think of any circumstance where people refer to them exclusively by the atomic number without also at least providing the chemical symbol. I was going to outright remove the link to chlorinebromine in 35, but when I saw how many other number disambiguation pages had element links, I thought I should bring it up here before removing them all. (For reference, the pages with element links are 3 (disambiguation), 6 (disambiguation), 12, 16-38, 42, 55, 60, 64, 65, 71, 82, and 87-118.) ~2026-30427-71 (talk) 07:20, 21 May 2026 (UTC)

That sounds like they're there because of the existence of e.g. 35Br, element 6 (6C), etc. In case of 3, it's spelled out as the use of III for group 3 element. If you can't find evidence that people actually use that, it sounds like it should be moved to the See also section, maybe to help people who use lists more to research than to navigate. --Joy (talk) 09:41, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
I don't think it makes sense to have them in the see also section either. If someone comes across the symbol 6C and wants to know what it means, they aren't going to try to find that out by searching for the number 6. If someone wants to search for elements with a specific atomic number, periodic table, list of chemical elements, and the element [number] redirects are all better resources for that than searching a specific number. It makes slightly more sense for the post-lawrencium elements that were named after the IUPAC started using names derived from the atomic number for undiscovered elements, but even then I can't imagine someone who came across the old name and doesn't know the new one searching for the number instead of some other term that would redirect to the correct page. I am fine with groups and periods being listed in number disambiguation pages since those are occasionally referred to with bare numbers; I was specifically objecting to the presence of lithium on the disambiguation page for 3. ~2026-30427-71 (talk) 02:05, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
they aren't going to try to find that out by searching for the number 6 that's an interesting claim, but I can't see how you could ever prove it - how would we know how every possible reader thinks when they see a curious number? It's perfectly plausible that there's a minority of people who would be sufficiently confused by this that they wouldn't search for 6C but just 6 or just C. Removing these even from See also seems unnecessarily mean to these people. --Joy (talk) 08:22, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
