Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez is a Spanish author, executive and educator known for his work on project management and strategy implementation. He was the global chair of the Project Management Institute (PMI) in 2016, the first Spaniard to hold the position,[1] and has been listed by the Thinkers50 ranking of management thinkers.[2][3] He is the author of several books on project management, including the Harvard Business Review Project Management Handbook (2021).[4]

Early life and education

Nieto-Rodriguez was born in Madrid, Spain.[1] He studied economics at the Complutense University of Madrid and earned an MBA from London Business School.[1] He also completed the International Directors Programme at INSEAD.[5]

Career

Business career

Nieto-Rodriguez began his career in consulting, spending around ten years at PricewaterhouseCoopers.[1] He later joined Fortis, where he worked on the bank's integration following the acquisition of ABN AMRO, and subsequently held a project portfolio management role at BNP Paribas Fortis.[1][5] He went on to lead project and transformation functions at the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.[5]

He is the founder of the consulting firm Projects&Co and a co-founder of the Strategy Implementation Institute.[2] In 2017 he helped launch the Brightline Initiative, a coalition convened by PMI to address strategy implementation.[2]

Project Management Institute

Nieto-Rodriguez was elected to the global board of directors of the Project Management Institute in 2013 and served as vice chair in 2015.[2] In 2016 he became the organization's global chair, the first Spanish national to hold the role.[1] In 2021 he was named a PMI Fellow.[2] He has also served as a vice president of the UK's Association for Project Management.[2]

Writing and academia

Nieto-Rodriguez is a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review, including the 2021 article "The Project Economy Has Arrived."[6] His work has popularised the idea of a "project economy," the argument that projects have become the principal way organisations create value.[6][7] He has taught executive education at business schools including Solvay, Vlerick Business School and IE Business School.[2]

Recognition

In 2023 Nieto-Rodriguez was included in the Thinkers50 ranking of the most influential management thinkers, described in Spanish coverage as the first Spaniard to appear on the list.[2][3] He received the PMI David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award for his writing.[2]
