The Arthunkal Beach Fest is an annual two-day cultural festival held on 30 and 31 December at Arthunkal Beach in the Alappuzha district of Kerala, India. The festival was first organised in 2019 by the Nammude Arthunkal Charitable Society (NACS), a local voluntary organisation, and features performances of traditional Kerala art forms alongside contemporary music and other events.[1]
Programme
Coverage of the festival describes performances of traditional Kerala art forms including Chavittunatakam, Thiruvathirakali and Margamkali, staged alongside contemporary music sets, art installations, sand art and photography exhibitions.[2]
Other reported activities have included traditional dinghy boat races in the estuary adjoining the beach and, from 2024, an exhibition of 4×4 off-road vehicles.[3] The festival has also been used as a venue for swimming and water-safety training for children.[4]
History
The first edition of the festival was held on 30 and 31 December 2019. According to the organisers, the festival was not held in 2020 or 2021 owing to restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
The 2022 edition featured the Kerala-based music group Ainthinai.[5] The 2023 edition included performances by the folk band Chumaduthangi and a set by DJ Ignatius, who is from Arthunkal.[6]
For the 2024 edition, the line-up included singer Anwar Sadath and DJ DK, and an exhibition of 4×4 off-road vehicles was added to the programme.[3]
The fifth edition was announced for 30 and 31 December 2025, with the Thewar Band scheduled as the headline act.[7]
Organisers
The festival is organised by the Nammude Arthunkal Charitable Society (NACS), a registered non-profit society based in Arthunkal. According to the organisers, the society's stated aims include community development, environmental work and charitable activities in the region.
