Barupė Primary School (Lithuanian: Barupės pagrindinė mokykla), officially called Jonava District Barupė Primary School,[1] was a multifunctional centre,[2] pre-primary, primary, and secondary school in Kuigaliai, Jonava District Municipality, in Kaunas county, in central Lithuania.[3]
History
Pre-Soviet and Soviet
Educational activity in Kuigaliai dates back to at least 1923, when a primary school was established in the village.[4] The school belonged to a wealthy farmer named Jonas Smailis. The school enrolled around ten pupils, with the teacher being named Povilas Makarskis.[5][6]
In 1933, the school was relocated to the village of Paduobė to a farmer named Ipolitas Jočimas.[5] The school now enrolled a total of 30 to 40 pupils who were taught by a teacher named Masiliūnas.[6]
In 1940, the school was relocated to Kuigaliai and now belonged to a farmer called Boreiša. Their teacher was called Rabačiauskaitė. In 1944, the ownership was transferred to former landowner Teodoras Salogubas. By 1947, the school enrolled 60 students and had a total of four teachers. In 1958, a building in Paduobė was renovated. The school was relocated back to Paduobė, which operated until 1980, being moved back again to Kuigaliai.[6]
A school library was established in 1961 to serve the whole village. During the late Soviet and early post-Soviet period, the school operated as a nine-year school from September 1989 to 1994, enrolling a total of 86 students.[4][6]
The current building was constructed in 1988 and officially opened on September 1, 1988, by Robertas Mikulėnas.[6]
Modern
In subsequent years, it functioned as a primary and secondary school under the name Barupė Primary School. Prior to its reorganization in 2019, the school consisted of two primary-level class groups with a total enrollment of seventeen pupils.[7]
In 2003, a controversy involving Brunonas Romanas Gailius (who was the school director at the time) led to his dismissal. According to the Jonava District Municipal Council, Gailius was in breach of article 111 (employee working time) and article 177 (employees' trustee of defining their rights) of the Lithuanian Labor Code. This caused some local panic between teachers and parents; the school had no permanent headmaster for almost half a year and operations were taken over temporarily by Dalia Vilkelienė,[8] who became the new school director in 2022.
In 2015, the school merged with the Jonava District Municipal pre-school called "Butterfly" (Drugelis).[6]
In 2018, the Kuigaliai Women's Club was founded in the school's library to organize local celebrations and events, assist with travel accessibility (development and maintenance of public spaces),[9] participate in village education, and be as a representative for the village.[10]
Reorganization
On April 30, 2019, the school was reorganized into a branch of the Žeimiai School-Multifunctional Centre (Žeimių mokykla-daugiafunkcis centras) by the Jonava District Municipal Council.[3][11][12]
Prior to the reorganization, activities like "Gardening a Garden" (Daržo auginimą) in 2015 were only localised to Kuigaliai and small surrounding villages such as Nociūnai and Pėdžiai. The aim was to educate more children on international and local cultures, such as the independence of Lithuania or sympathy towards countries like Cyprus.[13] Afterwards, the reorganization allowed schools from the branch to participate at Barupė, increasing the number of visitors and expanding its presence in the Jonava District Municipality.[14][15] Events included:
- A summer camp in June 2019 which included hiking, role-playing, scouting, cooking, and fishing.[16]
- Sports events such as a 3x3 basketball tournament in December 2023.[17]
- Music events included "Hello, neighbor" (Labas, kaimyne) in May 2024[18] and "Traditions and the Present" (Tradicijos ir Dabartis) in 2019.[19]
A pre-school education group titled "Dwarfs" (Nykštukai) was hosted to provide early childhood learning.[20]
In 2024, the website for the Žeimiai School-Multifunctional Centre was updated to a new homepage and domain.[21][22]
Deregistration
In April 2025, the Jonava District Municipal Council announced that, as part of an ongoing reorganization of rural schools in local villages,[23] the Barupės branch would cease activity.[24][25] Only the Barupė branch would close.[26] The decision, approved by council vote led by Vytautas Žebrauskas,[27] included the termination of the branch's primary education programme and its closure by the end of August 2025.[28]
