Bharat Sevak Samaj (BSS) is a national non-governmental organization in India, founded in 1952 by a resolution of the Planning Commission of India. It was envisioned as a people's movement for national reconstruction and development, encouraging voluntary participation in nation-building. Over the years, BSS has expanded into areas including vocational education, healthcare, cultural promotion, and community welfare across India.[1]

History

Bharat Sevak Samaj was created in 1952 by the Government of India through the Planning Commission, with the aim of mobilising citizens for voluntary participation in social and economic programmes. It played a role in early rural development, adult literacy campaigns, and skill training initiatives in independent India.[2]

Activities

BSS has organised and affiliated institutions in multiple fields:

  • **Vocational Education** – BSS has partnered with institutes to provide diploma and certificate courses in healthcare, technical training, and other fields.[3]
  • **Healthcare Training** – In collaboration with hospitals and training centres, BSS has conducted healthcare courses, with students graduating under BSS certification.[4]
  • **Cultural and Environmental Events** – BSS has organised and participated in events such as film festivals, environmental awareness campaigns, and award ceremonies.[5]

Leadership

In January 2019, B. S. Balachandran was appointed as Chairman of BSS.[6] Under his leadership, the organisation has expanded its role in education, vocational training, and public service programmes.

Awards and Recognition

BSS regularly confers awards at the national and state level to individuals in the fields of arts, culture, literature, and public service. Examples include:

  • Recognition of award winners in Kerala and beyond for contributions in arts and literature.[7]
  • National award ceremonies presented by BSS to cultural and literary figures.[8][9]
  • Participation of BSS representatives in national award functions and cultural events.[10]
