Billtrust is a global financial technology company headquartered in Hamilton Township, New Jersey[1] that develops cloud-based accounts receivable automation software. Founded in 2001, the company went public on the NASDAQ in January 2021 via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) and was taken private in December 2022 following a $1.7 billion acquisition by EQT Private equity. [2]

History

Billtrust was founded in 2001 by Flint Lane, a former Accenture employee who had previously founded PayTrust, an electronic billing company that was sold to Metavante in 2001. Lane started Billtrust to address inefficiencies in business-to-business invoice and payment processes.[3] Its early offerings included printing and mailing physical invoices and e-invoices[4] and it has steadily expanded into offering e-commerce, payments, cash application, and collections solutions. The company was initially headquartered in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, before relocating its headquarters to Lawrenceville, New Jersey in 2017, in part due to $1.3 million in Grow New Jersey tax credits tied to a commitment to create 200 new jobs and retain existing staff.[5]

Prior to going public, Billtrust raised over $100 million in venture capital from investors including Bain Capital Ventures, Riverwood Capital, and Goldman Sachs, and completed nine acquisitions.[6]

In October 2020, Billtrust announced a definitive agreement to merge with South Mountain Merger Corporation, a SPAC listed on the Nasdaq, in a deal valuing the combined company at approximately $1.3 billion. The transaction closed in January 2021, and the company began trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol BTRS.[7]

Products and services

Billtrust develops software for automating the order-to-cash process, which encompasses credit decisioning, invoicing, payment processing, cash application, and collections. Its platform integrates with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and financial institutions. The company also operates the Business Payments Network (BPN), which connects buyers and suppliers to facilitate electronic B2B payments.[8]

Acquisitions

Billtrust expanded its platform through a series of acquisitions. In 2021, the company acquired iController, a Belgium-based collections management software provider, for $58 million.[9] That same year, Billtrust acquired Order2Cash, a Netherlands-based provider of business-to-business order-to-cash solutions, to expand its European presence and add e-invoicing capabilities.[10]

Acquisition by EQT Private Equity

On September 28, 2022, Billtrust announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by EQT Private Equity, a Sweden-based global investment firm, in an all-cash transaction valuing the company’s equity at approximately $1.7 billion. The acquisition received shareholder approval in December 2022 and closed that same month, at which point Billtrust’s common stock was delisted from the Nasdaq.[11]

Leadership

Flint Lane served as founder and CEO of Billtrust from its founding in 2001 until his departure following the EQT acquisition. Sunil Rajasekar succeeded Lane as CEO in December 2022. On December 2, 2025, Billtrust announced the appointment of Grant Halloran as Chief Executive Officer. Halloran previously served as CEO of Planful, a financial performance management software company.[12]
