Brooke M. Haney (they/she) is a New York City-based intimacy coordinator, choreographer, writer, and educator known for their pioneering work in intimacy direction and advocacy for queer representation in performance. They are one of the first 50 intimacy coordinators recognized as qualified by SAG-AFTRA.[1][2]

Early Life and Education

Haney holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts from the University of Washington and a Master of Fine Arts in Performance from the University of Central Florida. They have also studied improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade.[3]

Career

Intimacy Coordination

Haney began their career as an intimacy choreographer in theater[4] and academia before transitioning to film and television during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have since worked on numerous productions, including[5]

Writing and Theatre

Haney is the author of The Intimacy Coordinator's Guidebook: Specialties for Stage and Screen, published by Routledge in 2024. The book explores the role of intimacy choreographers with contributions from over 30 industry professionals, covering topics such as working with minors, prosthetics, intimacy and disability, staging queer intimacy, and scenes of trauma. It includes details on choreography, consent, and closure techniques.[6]

Additionally, they are the author of A History of Intimacy Professionals in Entertainment, published in 2025.[7]

As a playwright, Haney's works include Kiss Me or Cut Off My Head, a contemporary retelling of the Medusa myth, and Now What?, a docudrama responding to the 2016 U.S. presidential election[8]

Teaching and Advocacy

Haney has taught acting at Marymount Manhattan College for eight years and has led intimacy choreography workshops at institutions such as Vassar College, Syracuse University, NYU, University of Central Florida, and Ventura College.

They are also the Artistic Producer of Daughters of Troy, a theater company dedicated to empowering women and non-binary artists. In this role, Haney has produced and directed works that explore themes of female sexuality and desire.

Additionally, Haney created The Actor's Warm Down, a 20-minute closure practice for actors to de-role from difficult and intense material.[9]

Personal Life

Haney is a proud queer, non-binary individual and an advocate for authentic representation in media.
