Chicago bop is a dance-oriented upbeat Trap music sub-genre and scene that emerged in Chicago in the early 2010s, developing alongside the rise of Drill music. [1] [2] [3]
This style is typically characterised by fast-paced BPMs, melodic auto-tuned vocals, and upbeat synth melodies often using square lead waves as well as wind instruments and incorporates the intense and heavy drum patterns of Chicago Drill music. In contrast to the dark and intense atmosphere of Drill music, songs in the Chicago bop genre are generally Dance and Pop rap-oriented. [1][4] Originating in youth communities on Chicago West and South Side, this genre and scene gained popularity in other U.S. states and in schools thanks to Speaker Knockerz and Chief Keef Sicko Mobb[1]
With the decline in the popularity of Drill music in Chicago in the early 2010s, Chicago bop largely disappeared; however, its influence has not been erased. It pioneered and served as a source of inspiration for Trap music genres such as Plugg and Pluggnb, and is also regarded as a forerunner of Hyperpop, having had a significant impact on many Pop rap artists, contributing to the of the genre. Artists and Collectives such as 2Famous and Lil2Posh influenced Underground hip-hop scenes and contributed to the evolution of Chicago bop. [3] [5]
