Christopher Robert Swanson (born 1972)[1] is an American law enforcement officer,[2] university professor,[3] and paramedic,[4] who has served as the Sheriff of Genesee County, Michigan since 2020.[2] A member of the Democratic Party, he has also been active in organized labor through his membership in the American Federation of Teachers Local 6244.[5]
Swanson was first elected sheriff in 2020 and was reelected in 2024.[6] In both elections, he carried Genesee County by larger margins than those of the Democratic presidential ticket in the same years. In 2020, Swanson won approximately 67 percent of the vote in the sheriff’s race, outperforming the countywide result of Joe Biden by about 14 percentage points.[7] In 2024, he again exceeded the Democratic presidential nominee’s performance in Genesee County, winning roughly 65 percent of the vote—about 14 percentage points higher than the county result for Kamala Harris.[8]
He is a candidate for Governor of Michigan in the 2026 Michigan gubernatorial election, having announced his candidacy in February 2025.[9]
Early Life and Education
Swanson was raised in Genesee County, Michigan and graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1990.[10] Swanson attended Mott Community College before graduating from University of Michigan-Flint with a Bachelors in Applied Science [11] and a Masters in Public Administration.[12]
Career
Swanson began his career with the office of the Genesee County Sheriff in 1991.[10] Swanson’s law enforcement career made him the third consecutive generation in his family to work in Michigan law enforcement.[13] Early in his career, he served in the office's marine division and later worked in multiple areas of the sheriff’s office, including the paramedic division, corrections division, patrol division and narcotics division.[10]
In 2000, Swanson became a sergeant in the detective bureau, in 2004, was promoted to lieutenant, and later that year to captain, a position he held prior to serving as undersheriff.
Furthermore, Swanson also served as the Genesee County Emergency Manager during the Flint water crisis.[14] In this position, he served the people of Genesee County by learning from and strategizing with informed parties and stakeholders.[14]
Swanson was appointed Sheriff in December 2019 and took office in January 2020, following the retirement of longtime Sheriff Robert J. Pickell.[10] He subsequently sought election to the office and won the Democratic primary in May 2020.[10]
In June 2020, during nationwide protests following the murder of George Floyd, Swanson gained national attention after joining a peaceful demonstration in Flint, Michigan.[15] According to reporting by various sources, Swanson removed his riot helmet, addressed demonstrators, and walked alongside protesters during a march, emphasizing the role of law enforcement in protecting the public’s right to be heard.[16] Video of the incident circulated widely on social media and was cited as an example of police engagement with protesters during the unrest.[17] The demonstration Swanson attended remained peaceful amid a period of widespread protests and clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators in other cities.[15]
Swanson was elected sheriff in 2020 and reelected in 2024, winning approximately 67 percent[18] and 65 percent[19] of the vote, respectively. In both races, his performance exceeded that of the Democratic presidential nominees in Genesee County by about 14 percentage points.[18] [19]
In 2021, Swanson helped bring murder charges for a cold case that he had initially investigated decades ago. Mary Prier, 88 years old, was killed in 1997.[20] The perpetrator pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder and first-degree criminal sexual conduct.[21]
In September 2025, Swanson was part of the on-scene response to a shooting at a meetinghouse of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints in Genesee County, Michigan.[22] In addition to responding to the scene and marshaling the response, Swanson arranged and led a briefing for local faith-based leaders.[23]
Programs and Initiatives
G.H.O.S.T
In 2019, in working with the office of the Genesee County Sheriff, Swanson founded the Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team (G.H.O.S.T).[24] The purpose of the task force is to prevent crimes related to human trafficking and criminal sexual conduct.[25] As of 4 years after the creation of the program, there had been over 200 alleged predators arrested.[26] Popular television personality Chris Hansen has appeared multiple times with Swanson in order to showcase the program.[27][28]
I.G.N.I.T.E.
In 2020, following advocacy around the country for criminal justice reform, Swanson launched the Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education (I.G.N.I.T.E.).[29] The program offers education in both practical and specialized skills such as literacy, financial literacy, and nutrition, as well as tech skills, learning instruments, and mindfulness, respectively.[29] I.G.N.I.T.E. has been studied at elite research institutions such as Harvard University in collaboration with Brown University and University of Michigan.[30] Furthermore, the model itself has been implemented in Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office in Charlotte, North Carolina.[31] Additionally, the National Sheriff’s Association has turned I.G.N.I.T.E. from a county-wide program into a national initiative.[31] Studies found that in Genesee County, both the rates of violence within the jail and the rates of recidivism were both lowered significantly.[30] I.G.N.I.T.E. has drawn praise from figures in Michigan, such as Gretchen Whitmer and Jim Harbaugh as well as celebrities like Snoop Dogg and Jelly Roll.[32][33][34][35]
Public Recognition/Profile
DNC
In 2024, Swanson was featured in advertisements for the Democratic National Convention and spoke at the DNC on the day that Kamala Harris took her nomination.[36] He spoke of themes such as unity, progressive policing policies, and what it means to practice law enforcement properly.[37]
Oxford
In 2025, Swanson was invited to speak at the World Literacy Summit hosted by the University of Oxford.[35] In collaboration with country rock star Jelly Roll, Swanson presented on I.G.N.I.T.E. and its positive effects on crime and safety within the county jail, while Jelly Roll talked about the effect of I.G.N.I.T.E. on the psyche and personal evolution of inmates and their families.[35]
