Christopher J McKimmie is an American politician, law enforcement officer, and military service member serving as a member of the Niagara County Legislature. McKimmie represents the 3rd Legislative District, which covers the La Salle community of the City of Niagara Falls, New York and a portion of the Town of Niagara, New York.[1] First elected in 2023, McKimmie is a member of the Republican Party.

Early life and education

McKimmie is a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, New York. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 2008 and from Niagara County Community College in 2010 with an Associate of Science in Business Administration. He later earned a Bachelor of Science in business, management, and economics with a concentration in public administration from SUNY Empire State College.[2]

He was a member of the Leadership Niagara Class of 2024, a regional leadership development program in Niagara County.[3]

Military service

McKimmie enlisted in the United States Air Force and has served in the New York Air National Guard. He completed basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in 2010 and was recognized as an honor graduate.[4] During his service, he has held roles including firefighter, member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, and First Sergeant.[5]

Law enforcement career

McKimmie joined the Niagara Falls Police Department in 2013.[6] He was promoted to lieutenant in 2022 and has served in supervisory roles within the patrol division.[7]

During his career, McKimmie has served in the department’s Traffic Division, Crash Management Unit, and Emergency Response Team, and is a certified Drug Recognition Expert with experience in traffic safety, DWI enforcement, and collision reconstruction.[8]

McKimmie has also been involved in public safety initiatives related to traffic and bicycle safety.[9]

Community service

McKimmie previously served as a volunteer firefighter with the Frontier Volunteer Fire Company in Wheatfield, New York, where he served as President of the board of directors.[10] He also served as a volunteer emergency medical technician with Tri-Community Ambulance Service, where he held the role of Assistant Chief of Operations.[11]

He has been involved in efforts to support the Firefighters Association of the State of New York and initiatives aimed at addressing volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention challenges in New York State.[12][13] He has also participated in efforts with federal and local officials, including U.S. Representative Claudia Tenney, regarding proposed federal regulations affecting volunteer fire departments.[14][15]

Political career

Niagara County Legislature

McKimmie was elected to the Niagara County Legislature in the November 2023 general election, defeating Democratic and Working Families Party nominee Noelle Citarella.[16] He was re-elected in 2025 without opposition.[17]

He currently serves as chair of the Community Safety and Security Committee, a member of the Economic Development Committee, and as second deputy majority leader.[18]

In addition to his role in county government, McKimmie serves as the Legislature’s appointee to the Niagara-Orleans Regional Land Improvement Corporation, where he serves as vice chairman.[19] He also serves on the board of directors of the Niagara Community Action Program.[20] He is also a member of the Niagara County Fire Advisory Board and the Niagara County Traffic Safety Board.[21][22]

McKimmie has been involved in issues related to energy policy and utility costs in New York State. In 2025, he called for the resignation of members of the New York State Public Service Commission following approval of utility rate increases.[23] He has also expressed opposition to utility rate increases and policies contributing to rising energy costs in New York State.[24]

McKimmie has been involved in economic development initiatives in Niagara County. He has supported programs such as the county’s façade improvement grant program aimed at assisting local businesses with property improvements,[25] and has been involved in large-scale development projects in the county, including the development of an Amazon facility in the Town of Niagara.[26]
