Estíbaliz Espinosa Río (born July 6, 1974, in A Coruña) is a Galician poet, essayist, translator, singer, and science communicator. She is known for interweaving poetry, science, and music in her literary work. She holds degrees in Sociology and Hispanic Philology from the University of A Coruña.[1]

Career
Poetry
Her first poetry collection in Galician is Mecánica Zeleste ("Zelestial Mechanics", 1999),[1] in which she began to explore themes such as astronomy and poetic rebellion. She subsequently published Pan (libro de ler e desler) (2000), –orama (2002), and Número e (2004). The latter is a cycle of texts alluding to science, intimacy, the search for identity, and the poetic relationship with mathematics. This collection includes references to the gaze and hybridization with other sciences and arts, touching upon aspects such as gender perspective, fairy tales, and astronomy from a philosophical standpoint.
Zoommm. Textos biónicos (2007/2009) and Papel a punto de (2011) are experimental poetic works focusing on biology, science, language, and the literary system.[2][3]
In the collection Curiosidade ("Curiosity", 2017), illustrated by Celsius Pictor,[4] she she addresses themes of science, language, gender, and motherhood, often with irony.[5]
In ...as neuronas irmás... ("...the sister neurons...", 2018), she addressed themes such as the reconciliation of the human being within the cosmos, biology, artificial intelligence, and family sociopolitics regarding grief and the death of a loved one.[6]
She contributes to national and international magazines such as Luzes,Dorna, Grial, and Strange Horizons.[7][8]
Literature, science, and music
Espinosa directs initiatives that combine poetry, science, and music in Galician. These include O entrelazamento, A ciencia do poema, Coruña Curiosa (City Council of A Coruña, 2020), As curiosas: son de letras+ciencias, Curiosas na Lúa (Deputation of A Coruña, 2019), Escrita no ceo (Planetarium of A Coruña, 2014), Porto ciencia/Porto poema. A Coruña polímata (2023), and Novembro Estelar (2021, 2022).[9]
Online, she is a writer and administrator of several blogs, including ...mmmm...,[10] [...], abra la cápsula, por favor,[11] sagasomos,[12] and Laboratorio da palabra.
She has recorded audio poems (Instituto Cervantes of New York, El Gaviero, 2005), her own audiobooks,[13] and podcasts.[14]
She has been an invited guest at numerous literary festivals, both national and international (Cosmopoética, North Wales, La Mediterrània, Bowery Poetry Club in New York, Festival de Ecopoesía, Festival Nudo), scientific events (Naukas Coruña, A fotografía 51, Coruña Comunica Ciencia), and musical events (Gratia Plena).
Between 1996 and 2001, she co-directed and presented Ulalume, a literary program on the independent radio station Cuac FM.[15] She presented a science and poetry space in Diario Cultural Radio galega (2022–2024), in science program Efervesciencia (2023-) and in Zigzag Televisión de Galicia (2018–2019).[16] [17] [18]
As a performer, she has worked as an actress in various theater and opera productions (Peter Pan, O club da calceta, Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin, Turandot). She is a professional singer with a mezzo-soprano and soprano range. She has sung in the choir of the Galicia Symphony Orchestra and Aisis, and performs professionally as a soloist in jazz, Galician music, and lyrical singing.[19]
She also worked on the "Urban Travel Machines" poetry in planetariums project, coordinated by Philip Meersman in Antwerp, Brussels, and A Coruña.[20]
Literary style and reception
Critics and literary journalists have described Espinosa's poetics and work characterized by a hybrid of science, philosophy, music, and employing irony characteristic of the Galician literary tradition known as retranca.[21]
Critic Ramón Nicolás, writing in Caderno da crítica, described Curiosidade as addressing science, language, gender, and motherhood from an ironic perspective.[22].
In a review of ...as neuronas irmás... published in Afundación poetry prize, critic and writer Mario Regueira wrote that Espinosa's poetry contains "elements that make her unique and shape her as one of the most interesting and original figures of our time."
Critic and novelist César Lorenzo wrote in a review "It is highly commendable when the author forces herself to traverse universes and words that she might be the first to introduce into the Galician literary sphere"[23]
