The Faculty of Technology, University of Delhi (FoT DU) is an technology department of the University of Delhi, situated in Maharishi Kanad Bhawan on the university's North Campus. It runs undergraduate B.Tech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.[1]

History

The Faculty of Technology traces its beginnings to the early 1950s, when degree-level engineering education was expanding in Delhi under the University of Delhi. In 1952, Delhi Polytechnic — established in 1941 at the historic Kashmere Gate campus as a follow-up to the Wood and Abbott Committee of 1938 — became affiliated with the University of Delhi for degree-awarding purposes and began offering formal Bachelor of Engineering degree programmes.[2] That institution later evolved into Delhi College of Engineering and is today known as Delhi Technological University.[2]

For several decades, the Faculty of Technology served as the degree-granting body for affiliated engineering colleges, most notably Delhi College of Engineering and the Delhi Institute of Technology (later renamed Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology), now known as Netaji Subhas University of Technology.[3] Delhi College of Engineering was affiliated with the Faculty of Technology, University of Delhi from 1952 until 2009, when it was granted state university status and renamed Delhi Technological University.[2] The Delhi Institute of Technology, established in 1983, was similarly affiliated with the Faculty of Technology, University of Delhi; it was renamed Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology in 1997 and granted university status as Netaji Subhas University of Technology in 2018.[3]

In 2021, the University of Delhi constituted a committee to deliberate on the reintroduction of B.Tech programmes under the Faculty of Technology, and separately sought ₹100 crore from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to fund the necessary laboratory and classroom infrastructure.[4] The university subsequently received approval from the Ministry of Education for the creation of 72 teaching and 48 non-teaching posts for the Faculty of Technology.[5]

The Faculty of Technology was re-established in 2023 as a direct teaching unit of the University of Delhi, welcoming its first B.Tech cohort that same year. The university's Executive Council formally approved the start of the engineering programme at its 1,266th meeting on 9 June 2023.[5]

Campus and facilities

The faculty is housed in Maharishi Kanad Bhawan on the North Campus of the University of Delhi. Students and staff draw on the wider university's infrastructure, including its libraries, shared laboratories, and research facilities.[6]

Departments

The faculty comprises the following departments:[6]

  • Department of Computer Science and Engineering — offers the B.Tech programme in Computer Science and Engineering.
  • Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering — offers the B.Tech programme in Electronics and Communication Engineering.
  • Department of Electrical Engineering — offers the B.Tech programme in Electrical Engineering.
  • Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities — provides foundational courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and humanities for all engineering students.

Academic programmes

The three B.Tech specialisations — Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Electrical Engineering — were introduced in 2023 with a combined annual intake of 360 students.[1][7]

ProgrammeDurationAnnual intakeAdmission basis
B.Tech (Computer Science and Engineering)4 years120 seatsJEE Main (CRL)
B.Tech (Electronics and Communication Engineering)4 years120 seatsJEE Main (CRL)
B.Tech (Electrical Engineering)4 years120 seatsJEE Main (CRL)

Entry is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main All India Common Rank List (CRL), with seat allocation managed through the university's centralised counselling process.[1]

Admissions and eligibility

Admission is based on JEE Main rankings and the University of Delhi's standard procedures. Candidates must have completed Class 12 or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as core subjects.[8] Reservation policies and eligibility criteria follow those set by the University of Delhi and the Government of India. Details on seat distribution, fees, and application steps are published on the official admission portal each year.[8]

Administration

The faculty operates within the administrative structure of the University of Delhi. The head of the faculty holds the title of Dean; as of 2026, this position is held by Prof. Sanjeev Singh.[9] Day-to-day departmental matters are overseen by Teachers-in-Charge, and all faculty appointments follow University of Delhi procedures.[10]

Student activities

Students take part in a range of technical and cultural events, including hackathons, tech fests, and activities organised through student bodies such as the IEEE student chapter.[6]

Affiliated and former institutions

Before being reconstituted as a direct teaching unit, the faculty historically served as the degree-granting body for engineering colleges that later became independent universities:

  • Delhi College of Engineering — founded as Delhi Polytechnic in 1941; renamed Delhi College of Engineering in 1965; now known as Delhi Technological University since 2009.[2]
  • Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology — established in 1983 as the Delhi Institute of Technology; renamed Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology in 1997; now known as Netaji Subhas University of Technology since 2018.[3]
