The Foumban Institute of Fine Arts, also known as the Institute of Fine Arts of the University of Dschang, was established in 1993. It is a public institution in Central Africa dedicated to artistic and cultural education. Located in Foumban, the arts capital of Cameroon, it offers programs in visual arts, engineering arts, technology and heritage, and performing arts. Its activities are aligned with the Operational Strategy of the New University Governance.

Historical

Administration

The Foumban Institute of Fine Arts (IBAF) was established as part of a university reform by Decree No. 93/029 of January 19, 1993, concerning the Administrative and Academic Organization of the University of Dschang.[1] It has been officially operational since the 2009/2010 academic year.[2] This institute is therefore under the auspices of the University of Dschang, even though the campus is located in the city of Foumban.[1] Its mission is to promote the arts and technology in order to make them a driving force for the development of cultural and artistic industries in Cameroon.[3]

Fields of study

The institute offers two main fields of study, namely Arts, Cultural Professions and Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Architecture.[2]

Organization

The IBAF training is organized around 16 tracks oriented in 6 Departments.[3]

Departments and Training

  • Visual Arts and Art History (sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, art history, and contemporary art)
  • Decorative Arts (fashion design, pattern making, textile arts, and environmental arts)
  • Arts, Technology, and Heritage (clay and metal technology, wood and fiber technology, heritage and museology)
  • Performing Arts (film, music, choreography, and stagecraft)
  • Architecture and Engineering
  • General Education (core and supplementary courses).

Diploma

The courses culminate in the awarding of bachelor's and master's degrees for all specializations.

Research activities and support for development

Both basic and applied research activities and experiments focus on the field of arts and technologies.[3] With regard to development support, this involves training local artisans, artists and producers, promoting research results in the production of works of art and improving artistic techniques.

Admission

Admission to the first year of the bachelor's degree program at this institute is by competitive examination and is open to holders of the BAC or GCL A/L in two scientific subjects.[5][6]
