History

The establishment of the institution commenced on 24 December 2016, when the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti officially laid the foundation stone for the "Government College of Engineering and Technology" at Safapora during a developmental tour of the Ganderbal district. The infrastructure project was sanctioned under the central Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme with an estimated construction outlay of ₹26 crore.[6] The campus, master-planned across 68 kanals of land, was designed to incorporate five distinct academic blocks alongside dedicated units for administration, laboratories, workshops, a computer center, and a library block.

The college officially opened its doors to the first batch of students during the 2017–18 academic term. Initially, instructional classes were conducted at a temporary setup before being fully relocated to the permanent site at Safapora near Manasbal Lake.[7]

In 2017, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir also established the region's first specialized architecture institution, the School of Architecture,[8] which originally operated out of a temporary campus at Abdul Ahad Azad Memorial Degree College in Bemina, Srinagar. In January 2020, the School of Architecture officially relocated to its permanent campus integrated within GCET Safapora, Ganderbal, marking it as the first functional institute for architectural education in the Kashmir Valley.[9]

In May 2025, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the campus to lay the foundation stone for an additional Science Block to expand the institution's laboratory and research facilities.[10]

The college campus is situated in a scenic location at Safapora, surrounded by hills and greenery near Manasbal Lake. Facilities include modern classrooms, laboratories, a library block, and sports grounds. The institution regularly organizes extracurricular activities, including environmental awareness initiatives, plantation drives, and national commemorative events in collaboration with local authorities.[11][12]

Academics

GCET Ganderbal offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programs in several engineering disciplines.[13] The academic curriculum and examination schedules are governed under the regulations of the Cluster University of Srinagar, which handles regular and lateral entry professional student selections for the institution.[14] The technical courses run by the college are structured according to the statutory guidelines issued by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).[15]

Faculty recruitment for the college's Applied Science and Humanities department has been processed through the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC).[16]

Admissions for the entrance of regular engineering and architecture batches are conducted through the J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) counseling framework, utilizing state Common Entrance Test (JKCET) alongside the national entrance examination JEE Main Paper-II NATA scores for architectural allocations.[17][18] The specialized evaluation patterns for the architecture stream operate natively on campus via dedicated examination allocations.[19]

Student Life

Students at GCET Ganderbal engage in a range of extracurricular activities, including sports, cultural programs, and outreach initiatives. The college organizes National Service Scheme (NSS) activities and industry workshops to support practical learning.

The institution provides opportunities for participation in both indoor and outdoor sports. Indoor facilities include table tennis, carrom, and snooker. Outdoor sports activities encompass cricket, football, basketball, and rugby, alongside other recreational events organized on campus. The college actively participates in regional inter-college tournaments, securing competitive wins in events like table tennis and volleyball against other constituent institutions.[20]

To improve technical skill development, training programs like the Jammu & Kashmir Employability Enhancement Training (JEET) scheme have been utilized for final-year students.[21] The college's technical role in the region has been recognized alongside other state universities for its core engineering streams.[22]

Vision and Mission

  • Vision: To establish the college as a center for engineering education and research, fostering innovation and sustainable development.
  • Mission: To deliver a matching technical education, encourage research, and collaborate with industries and communities for socio-economic growth.
