The prize is an annual award for European researchers under the age of forty whose work is regarded as making an outstanding contribution to their field. [1] [2] [3] It was established in memory of Henrik Enderlein, the former president of the Hertie School in Berlin and an alumnus of Sciences Po in Paris. [4] The award recognizes original research considered both academically excellent and relevant to public affairs and social cohesion in Europe.

The prize is awarded jointly by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the German Federal Foreign Office, the Hertie School, and Sciences Po. It includes a monetary award of €10,000.
