The Hong Kong Model United Nations (HKMUN) is Hong Kong's largest and oldest MUN Conference.[1], established in 1989[2]
HKMUN is typically held annually, with events hosted at venues such as the Hong Kong Science Park and the University of Hong Kong.[1]
Background
Since its founding, HKMUN has grown to become a prominent academic event in Hong Kong, attracting hundreds of students from diverse backgrounds.[3]
HKMUN simulates the operations of the United Nations, offering students the opportunity to act as diplomats. Participants engage in negotiations, draft resolutions, and practice public speaking, enhancing their understanding of international relations and global issues. The conference typically includes various committees, including:
- General Assembly
- Human Rights Council
- World Health Organisation
- United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
- Disarmament and International Security Committee
- Economic and Social Council
- United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
- United States Senate
- Security Council
- Other specialised committees like Historical Security Council and Ad Hoc committees.
HKMUN has been run independently by students since 2015.[4][5] Before that, HKMUN was supported by teacher supervisors.[6]
