Beverly Ruby, known as Icy Diamond, born on May 11th, 2000 in Dole in the Jura, is a French transgender influencer, activist, visual artist, author, model, director, producer and a former pornographic actress.

She grew up and attended school in Franche-Comté until 2016, before moving to Paris in 2017, where she lives, works, and studies.

Biography

Youth and career

Her childhood in Dole was marked by mistreatment by her parents, which is why she lived between foster homes and families until she was 17. She came out as gay at 13 years old[1]. Social medias have helped her, by offering queer representations and by answering questions about gender affirmation and identities. Transition came not as another coming-out, it occurred during her adolescence, although her high school denied it[1]. Beverly Ruby suffered from school bullying, homophobia, transphobia and physical and sexual violence[2] online as well as offline[1], which made her quit her training curriculum in fashion design at the age of 16[1]. Her life path led her into the field of political activism, through a commitment to gender equality, human rights, particularly for LGBTQIA+ people and sex workers[3]. Present at demonstrations and on social networks, she uses her image to raise awareness about these causes, such as during her appearance on the TV show "Touche Pas à mon Poste!" (TPMP) on C8, or at the Paris "Hôtel de Ville" (Paris City Hall).

Career as a pornographic actress

She started doing sex work online, selling dirty undies and doing customed video content for online clients[1]. She faced misogyny and transphobia by a famous French platform, and was supported by the Sex Workers Union STRASS she had joined as an activist[4]. She began her career as a pornographic actress in 2019[5][6]. She has been nominated in several categories at ceremonies and has received several awards. In 2020, she received the award for "Best Francophone Model"[7] at the Ero Awards and in 2021 the award in the "Best Tube Trans"[8] category at the same Ero Awards. In 2021 and 2023, Icy Diamond was nominated two times in the "Best Non US Performer" category at the Transgender Erotica Awards (The TEA Show, Los Angeles)[9][10]. She is credited as performer in 17 adult movies[6]. In April 2024, she announced in an interview on the OHO Llive streaming platform that she was retiring from porn industry. "I've done my time, I've lost the passion I had", she said to Mélissa Amneriss, Chloë Lemn and Thomas Guisgand who interviewed her during their broadcasting program "OHO Zone" (launched in February 2024 for just a few months before stopping)[11].

Direction and production

In 2021, Icy Diamond produced and directed her first pornographic movie, La bite au chocolat de beau papa (Icy Diamond Productions, France, 17min[12]). In the movie Icy plays a goofy trainee who works in her stepdad's restaurant, hired thanks to her mother. She has to find a way to prove her worth...

Artistic collaborations

Icy Diamond appears in the documentary movie Icy Beverly Ruby Diamond, which is dedicated to her, directed by Thomas Roget (2022). The documentary discusses her journey and her political battles, while following her during her stay in Brussels for the premiere of her film La Bite au Chocolat de Beau Papa, selected for the Brussels Porn Film Festival[3].

In the press realeases of the festivals she took part in, Icy is described as "an Icon, a pornstar, a survivor, a director, an activist, a hooker, an influencer and a trans faggot". Through her work and her radical identity, Icy "inspires like a symbol of resistance and disrupts patriarchal violence" (transphobia, misogyny, homophobia), with her "middle finger raised and the ass up in the air"[16]. Her own Production Studio page on PinkLabel.tv portrays her work as a way to "reappropriate and divert the mainstream’s porn codes and production by adding her touch of humor which allows a relationship of identification between the spectator and the performers"[12].

Activism and controversies

TPMP

During the demonstration against pension reform in Paris on February 11th, 2023, Icy Diamond was the victim of a sexual assault during a militant action[5]. The scene was filmed and quickly the video of the assault made the rounds on social networks, going viral. The Touche pas à mon poste! popular french TV show team invited Icy Diamond onto the live set to return to the assault during the program broadcast on Tuesday, February 14th, 2023. Taking advantage of the speaking space granted to her, Icy discusses the condition of women in the public space, ordinary machismo and the labor rights of sex workers, and puts several columnists back in their place after receiving insulting and misogynistic comments[17][18]. On the set, and while leaving it, Icy lifts her top and reveals her breasts in reference to Liberty Leading the People, a painting by Eugène Delacroix made in 1830. The sequences also go viral[19].

On March 11th, 2023, a "Pride Night" party held at the Paris City Hall was tinged with scandal after Icy Diamond took political action there. She posed suggestively in the corridors of the City Hall and posted the photos on social media to denounce France's policy of repression towards sex workers and the City of Paris's position on the issue. Her protest action was commented on in the French, British and Italian press. It also reported on the alleged sexual encounter that Icy Diamond had in the toilets of Paris City Hall, an encounter that makes Mayor Anne Hidalgo a "pimp" for housing a sex worker. Indeed, Icy's action aimed to criticize the Law of April 13, 2016, which penalizes clients and severely punishes pimping in all its forms, including providing logistical support for housing, namely helping, profiting from (even indirectly), or housing a sex worker (French Penal Code articles 225-5 to 225-12)[20]. Icy also did the action to contest the Mayor's issue of a series of ordinances against prostitution in the Bois de Boulogne, entailing fines and evictions. "I did it to protest the constant repression of sex workers: they hate us, they don't listen to us, they don't recognize our basic human rights," said Icy Diamond[21].

"New Marianne"

Through these two controversies, her interventions on social media, on the occasion of a column published in Friction Magazine[5] or during photo shootings, Icy Diamond claims a posture of the "New Marianne", of a queer icon of the revolution against transmisogyny and all forms of discrimination. She diverts from and reappropriates the emblematic symbolic figure of Marianne in the service of the fight for a more inclusive country. By speaking out loud, she disturbs the social order, her media presence allows to change the status quo.
