The Berlin-based Institute for Protest and Social Movement Studies (ipb - Institut für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung) is an extra-university research institute that is run by the Association for Protest and Social Movement Studies (Verein für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung e.V.)..[1][2]

Based on their own records, the association has gathered over 200 members since its establishment in 2012.[3]

History

The idea for establishing the Institute dates back to April 2012, when a group of social scientists published a memorandum.[4]

The ipb describes itselfs as a self-organized "Network Institute". Das In the past the ipb had collaborated with institutions such as WZB Berlin Social Science Center, the Technical University of Berlin, the Institute for Social Movements at the Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets (House of History of the Ruhr Area) and the Free University of Berlin .

Activities

The ipb takes on research projects on protests, social movements and civic engagement independently or in cooperation with universities and non-university research institutions and makes the research results publicly available on their website.

Collaborative research projects at the ipb include conducting demonstration surveys, cooperation in the collection and analysis of protest events[5][6], and short-term research projects on current protests.

Some examples include the demonstration surveys at the G20 summit in Hamburg in 2017[7], Monday Vigils for Peace[8][9] in 2014, Stop TTIP/CETA demonstration in October 2015[10][11] , PEGIDA demonstration in January 2015[12][13][14], several Fridays for Future demonstrations[15] and the protests against the rising German far-right in 2024[16]

The Association publishes the ipb working papers series and has its own section in the Forschungsjournal Soziale Bewegungen (Research Journal Social Movements).[17]

Each year the ipb organises a scientific conference, The first of these was the institute's founding conference in June 2013, entitled "Lots of activity – little research?", which took place at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center.[18]

These annual conferences of the ipb take place at changing academic institutions, such as the Technical University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, Free University of Berlin, as well as the Berlin-based Weizenbaum Institute and University of Bremen.

Structure

The Association's work is coordinated by its board members.

At the Institute, researchers can organize around specialised subject areas within various Working Groups.[19]
