The Institute for the Future of Education (IFE) is a research institute part of Tecnologico de Monterrey, a Mexican-based higher education institution.
History
The foundation of IFE was presented in December 18, 2020 by David Garza Salazar, rector of Tecnologico de Monterrey, with the belief that collaboration with other institutes and research in educational innovation will be critical in future generations.
During this first stage, IFE included different initiatives, such as the Educational Observatory, the Incubator and Accelerator entrepreneurship program in education and technology, and the International Conference in Education and Innovation (CIIE, by its acronym in Spanish). In its launch, two other projects, Living Lab (a platform for performing experiments in education) and Data Hub (a data repository for educational data) were announced for its future.[1]
Work
From its announcement in 2020 to today, the number of initiatives inside IFE have increased. In 2025, such initiatives were divided into four groups, each of them with their own contributions[2]:
Interdisciplinary research
- Research Lab: Focused in interdisciplinary research to provide solutions to core challenges identified by IFE.
- Living Lab & Data Hub: Aims to build assets to enable experimental and data-driven research.
- Novus: Created to provide support to faculty members to pursuit educational innovation projects.
- Impact Measurement: Committed to evaluating and strengthening educational innovation through scientific evidence.
- Writing Lab: Dedicated to foster a research culture.
- IFE Europe: Contributes to the transformation of higher education and lifelong learning in Europe through specific projects in the region.
- IFE AI Nexus: Assists different stakeholders in designing and advancing education enhanced by artificial intelligence through training, consulting, and collaborative research.
Entrepreneurship and technology transfer
- IFE Launch: Early stage acceleration program for educational startups worldwide.
- Edtech Transfer: Dedicated to the technological transfer of research results and innovations in the educational field.
- TecPrize: Open innovation initiative with the goal of solving educational challenges.
- IFE Edtech Summit: Event dedicated to connect edtech entrepreneurs, investors, and decision makers from educational institutions, in order to grow the ecosystem through alliance and valuable connections.
Impact projects and consultancy
- Consulting: Develops impact initiatives with universities, governments, industries and organizations to transform higher education and lifelong learning.
- Alternative Credentials: Its goal is to ensure that everyone has equal opportunities to acquire new skills to improve their lives.
Outreach and community building
- Observatory: Analyzes and disseminates the latest trends at the intersection of education, innovation and technology.
- IFE Conference: Educational conference, aimed to serve as a international platform for community building, and transformation of higher education and lifelong learning.
- IFE Conference Talks: Online sessions where experts share their insights and experiences on educational innovation trends.
Reports
IFE publishes different reports such as "IFE insights, IFE Impact reports", among others. The themes covered in these reports include educational innovation, quality, employability, and educational trends.

Past leaders
The Institute for the Future of Education has not experienced changes in their leadership since its foundation.
