KPM Analytics is an American analytical instrumentation company headquartered in Westborough, Massachusetts.[1] The company develops and manufactures instruments for measuring quality and safety parameters in food, agricultural, industrial, environmental, and clinical applications.

Founded in 2015 by private equity firm Union Park Capital[2] and expanded through a series of acquisitions, KPM Analytics offers instrumentation across five technology categories: near-infrared and infrared spectroscopy, wet chemistry analysis, radio frequency sensing, rheological and functional analysis, and machine vision inspection. Several of its instruments, including the Alveograph, Mixolab, and SDmatic, are recognized under ISO, AACC, and ICC international standards and are cited in peer-reviewed research in cereal science and food science.

History and ownership

KPM Analytics was formed in 2015 by Union Park Capital. In its first year, the company acquired Unity Scientific.[3] and Process Sensors Corporation,[4] both US-based manufacturers of NIR and IR analysis instrumentation.

In 2016, KPM Analytics acquired CHOPIN Technologies,[5] a French manufacturer of rheological and functional analyzers for the assessment of grain, flour, and dough properties.

In 2017, the company acquired AMS Alliance,[6] an Italian manufacturer of wet chemistry instrumentation for environmental, water, and food safety testing.

In 2019, KPM Analytics completed two acquisitions: Sightline Process Control, Inc.,[7] a Canadian manufacturer of machine vision inspection systems for the food industry, and Sensortech Systems,[8] a US-based manufacturer of NIR and RF sensors for in-process analysis in industrial and food applications.

In 2021, KPM Analytics established dedicated sales and support offices in Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom.[9]

In 2021, the company acquired EyePro System,[10] an Italian manufacturer of machine vision inspection systems for the food industry.

In 2022, KPM Analytics acquired Bruins Instruments,[11] a German manufacturer of NIR instrumentation for the agricultural and food industries.

In 2023, the company acquired Smart Vision Works,[12] a US-based manufacturer of AI-based machine vision systems for the food industry.

In 2023, a federal jury in Massachusetts awarded KPM Analytics approximately $5 million in damages following a trade secret misappropriation case against Blue Sun Scientific LLC and several former employees; the total award including attorneys' fees and interest subsequently exceeded $10 million.[13][14]

In 2025, KPM Analytics opened a new 22,000-square-foot vision inspection manufacturing facility in Pergine Valsugana, Italy, more than doubling production capacity for its food inspection systems.[15]

Products and technology

KPM Analytics' instrument portfolio spans five principal product categories.

Wet Chemistry Analyzers

KPM Analytics manufactures discrete and continuous flow analyzers for automated Colorimetry|Colorimetric and Electrochemistry|Electrochemical analysis. These instruments are used in agricultural, food, environmental, and clinical testing applications, and support methods compliant with EPA, FDA, and other international regulatory standards.[16][17]

Near-Infrared (NIR) and Infrared (IR) Spectroscopic Analyzers

The company produces laboratory, at-line, and inline Near-infrared spectroscopy and IR analyzers for compositional analysis of parameters such as moisture, protein, and fat in food, agricultural, and industrial materials.[18][19] These instruments enable rapid, non-destructive analysis as an alternative to traditional wet chemistry reference methods.

Radio Frequency (RF) Sensors

KPM Analytics offers inline Radio-frequency-based sensors for non-destructive compositional measurement in industrial manufacturing applications. Measured parameters include moisture, coat weight, film thickness, and nicotine content.

Rheological and Functional Analyzers

The company manufactures instruments for the Rheological and functional analysis of cereals, flours, and their derivatives. Key instruments include:

  • The Chopin alveograph|Alveograph (available as the AlveoPC and Alveolab), which measures the elasticity and extensibility of dough and is recognized under ISO, AACC, ICC, and AFNOR international standards[20][21]
  • The Mixolab, a thermo-mechanical torque rheometer that evaluates dough mixing behavior and starch gelatinization, recognized under AACC Method 54-60.01 and ICC Standard 173.[22]
  • The Rheofermentometer, used to characterize the fermentation and proofing behavior of leavened doughs.
  • The SDmatic, which measures damaged starch content in flour by an amperometric method, recognized under ISO 17715:2025,[23] AACC Method 76-33.01,[24] and ICC Standard 172.[25]

These instruments are used by grain traders, flour millers, food manufacturers, and research institutions to assess the processing quality and baking performance of wheat and other cereals.

Several of KPM Analytics' rheological instruments are recognized under international standards from multiple bodies, including the Cereals and Grains Association,[26] the International Association for Cereal Science and Technology (ICC),[27] the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), AFNOR, and national standards bodies in Russia (GOST) and China (GB/T)

Machine Vision Inspection Systems

KPM Analytics produces inline and at-line automated optical inspection systems for food manufacturing. Its vision platforms encompass 2D and 3D color imaging for product quality grading, defect detection, process control, and foreign body detection|foreign material detection,[28][29] including artificial intelligence|AI-based inspection systems.[30]

Research

KPM Analytics instruments have been used in independent peer-reviewed research across food science, agriculture, and environmental science. Studies utilizing KPM instruments have appeared in journals including Food Hydrocolloids, Future Foods, and Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition.[31][32]
