Kamola Makhmudova (19 April 1976 – 26 September 2024) was an influential Uzbek-British banker, international development professional, and philanthropist. She served as Head of the Azerbaijan Resident Office of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and was known for her work in trade finance, compliance, financial sector development, and charitable initiatives supporting education and healthcare in Uzbekistan.[1]
Early life and education
Kamola Makhmudova was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on April 19, 1976. As a child, she was a radio host for "Pionerskaya Zor'ka" ("Pioneer Dawn") - a youth radio program popular in the Soviet Union.
She attended the Uzbekistan State World Languages University (UzSWLU). While still a student, she started working at the regional office of ABN AMRO Bank in Tashkent, where she began her career in corporate banking. During that time, she completed a summer program in Business and Management at the London School of Economics in 1996.
Kamola Makhmudova moved to London in 2001 when she joined the Transport Team at the headquarters of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). She later became a dual citizen of Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom. In 2022, she completed postgraduate studies in Business Administration at Clare College, University of Cambridge.
Career
Kamola Makhmudova began her banking career at ABN AMRO Bank in Tashkent in early 1996 while it was establishing operations in the region. After approximately five years with ABN AMRO, she joined Sakura Bank (which later became part of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation), where she worked in corporate banking. She subsequently joined the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) office in Tashkent and was soon transferred to the bank's headquarters in London. Over the years, Kamola Makhmudova working with their Transport, Power and Energy Utilities Department and Financial Institutions Group. Beginning in 2009, Kamola Makhmudova took on a global role, helping lead the bank's expansion into the Middle East, North Africa, and Cyprus. She also worked on regional coverage and product development initiatives in Central Asia, Mongolia, Georgia, and Ukraine. In her role as a Senior Banker, Kamola Makhmudova developed the EBRD's Trade Facilitation Programme (TFP) - an internationally accredited training initiative for trade-finance professionals. Her work on the digitalization of the TFP subsequently led to the development of the EBRD Trade Finance e-Learning Programme and EBRD's external publication "Trade Exchange Magazine". Over the yeas she participated in policy discussions involving the International Chamber of Commerce, the World Trade Organization, and the International Monetary Fund on issues related to trade finance, compliance, and correspondent banking. In October 2021, Kamola Makhmudova was appointed the Country Head of the EBRD Resident Office in Baku, Azerbaijan. In that role, she oversaw the bank's investments and operations in the country and promoted projects related to green finance, infrastructure, banking-sector development, and renewable energy.[3] [4]
Personal life
Kamola Makhmudova married Rustam Makhmudov in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 1997. Together, they had two children: Camilla Yasmeen, born in 1998, and Hadi Hafiz, born in 2004.The family moved to London in 2001 following Makhmudova's appointment to the EBRD headquarters. Makhmudova was the granddaughter of Abdurakhim Abidov, a prominent Uzbek and Soviet immunologist, microbiologist, and medical researcher who was an Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan and was recognized as an Honored Doctor of Uzbekistan. Philanthropy
Kamola Makhmudova served as a non-executive director of several organizations, including a private university and the International Compliance Association in the United Kingdom. In addition, she founded the Eurasia chapter of the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS). In 2019, she completed the London Marathon to raise funds for the Khan Academy Uzbek Project, an initiative that helped localize the Khan Academy platform into the Uzbek language.[6] During her time at the University of Cambridge, Makhmudova worked closely on a project called Green Bukhara, which raised more funds to plant 7,000 trees in Bukhara as part of an initiative to reduce air temperatures and help prevent sandstorms and flooding. In 2020, she was awarded the "Order of Friendship" (Do'stlik) - a state award presented by the President of Uzbekistan, for her contributions to social and public initiatives in Uzbekistan.
Illness and death
Makhmudova was diagnosed with cancer in 2021. She continued her professional work and charitable activities while undergoing medical treatment in London and took a leave of absence in 2023 from her position as Head of the EBRD Resident Office in Azerbaijan. Kamola Makhmudova died in London on September 26, 2024, at the age of 48.
