Khonsu is a Norwegian extreme metal band formed in 2010 by musician and multi-instrumentalist Steffen Grønbech. The project is noted for its blending of black metal, industrial metal, and progressive metal, often incorporating themes of science fiction and misanthropy.[1]

History

The project was originally conceived under the name Merah, but subsequently transitioned to the name Khonsu. The name is derived from the ancient Egyptian lunar deity Khonsu, which translates as "traveller" or "pathfinder," in reference to the moon's path across the night sky.[2]

The band's debut full-length album, Anomalia, was released in 2012 through the label Season of Mist.[3] In 2014, the band released the EP Traveller, continuing the science-fiction themes present in the band's earlier material.[4] In 2016, the band released their second full-length album, The Xun Protectorate, which received critical attention for its industrial and conceptual sci-fi themes.[5]

Musical style

Khonsu is the project of Steffen Grønbech, who serves as its principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. The band's aesthetic incorporates electronic and symphonic elements to complement traditional metal instrumentation, with compositions noted for their progressive structure. The project frequently features studio contributions from musicians including Rune Folgerø, Torstein Parelius, and Arnt "Obsidian C." Grønbech.
