Maria Caminal ((born 1998) is an Andorran film director and screenwriter. Her 2022 short film Mariana, which deals with labour abuse and sexual harassment, was selected by Amnesty International for its film programme from among 300 submitted works, and screened at the International Women's Film Festival in New York and India.[1]

Early life and education

Caminal was born in 1998 in Andorra.[2] She moved to Spain to pursue higher education in cinematography, specializing in film direction, production, and screenwriting.[2]

Career

Caminal's first notable short film, the comedy Bienvenido a los 30, was entered in the 2019 Notodofilmfest, wwhere it reached the finals of the Flix Olé category, which recognises the most-viewed short film among the public. [3][2] It was also screened at the Festival de Cortometrajes de Bizarrya in Portugal.[4]

Her subsequent short film Mariana (2022), produced by Smiley Visual, stars Nacho Guerreros and Victoria Santos. The film explores themes of labour abuse and sexual harassment faced by an immigrant woman, and is based on real events.[5] Mariana screened at the Octubre Corto festival in La Rioja and at Zoom Igualada Short Film Festival in Catalonia, and was chosen by Amnesty International from among 300 submitted works for its film cycle.[1] The film also screened at the International Women's Film Festival in New York and India.[1]

In 2024, Caminal was selected for a residency at Faberllull to develop her first feature film, titled Les dones de gel (The Women of Ice), which addresses the topic of human trafficking.[1]

Awards and recognition

  • Premis Castellitx (2021): Rosa d'Or de la Pau for Best Short Film Script in Catalan (II Premi de Guió de Curtmetratge en català), awarded by the Ajuntament d'Algaida, for Llúcia, co-written with Fran Menchón Ortiz.[6]
