Mercy Creek is an American folk rock band based in Virginia. The group has primarily performed as a duo consisting of husband and wife Cheryl Nystrom Ball (vocals, guitar, mandolin) and Jim Ball (drums, percussion). Since their formation in 1998, they have been known for their independent approach to writing, recording, and touring. The band describes their style as "aggressive folk rock," which incorporates elements of modern folk, world beat, rock, blues, and bluegrass.[1]

History

Mercy Creek was formed in 1998 by singer/guitarist Cheryl Nystrom Ball and drummer Jim Ball. They became a full-time performing act that year, focusing on original music. The duo has consistently maintained an independent model, financing their recordings through extensive touring across the country, primarily on the East Coast. Their working relationship with producer Paul Mahern (known for work with artists such as Iggy Pop and John Mellencamp) began in 1999 with their first album, and Mahern has produced multiple subsequent releases for the band. The band's music has been featured on nationally syndicated radio shows and on XM Radio, and has been played in retail outlets. In 2006, one of their releases reached No. 50 on the FMQB AAA (Adult Album Alternative) radio charts. Cheryl Nystrom and Jim Ball married in 2015, after years of performing together.[2]

Musical Style

Mercy Creek's sound is centered on Cheryl Nystrom Ball's vocals and guitar work, supported by Jim Ball's drumming, which sometimes incorporates the African Djembe drum.
