The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) is a Central Public Sector Enterprise based in Guwahati, Assam. It operates under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) of the Government of India. The corporation was established in 1977 to help artisans and weavers in the eight North Eastern states with marketing and training.[1]
Operations
NEHHDC currently works with more than 20,000 artisans across 100 different tribal communities. It has trained young weavers and artisans in the region in areas like design and quality control. The corporation runs a retail brand called Purbashree, which has stores in cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad, as well as in Assam. In January 2026, the organization curated a display of regional crafts for the President's 'At Home' reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan.[2]
Projects
The corporation has recently set up new infrastructure in the region:
- In early 2025, a large Eri silk spinning mill was opened in the Baksa district of Assam. The mill cost ₹14.92 crore to build and can produce 450 kg of yarn every day. It is intended to support silk farmers and weavers in the area.[3]
- A textile testing laboratory in Garchuk, Guwahati, received NABL accreditation in 2024. This allows local weavers to get their fabrics tested for quality without sending them to other parts of India.[4]
- The corporation's Eri silk received the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification from Germany in August 2024, which certifies the textile as safe and free from harmful chemicals.[5]
Events
In December 2024, the Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav was held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event was inaugurated by the Prime Minister and was organized by NEHHDC to show the crafts and culture of the eight Northeastern states to a national audience.[6]
