The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) is an American professional association for physicians and other professionals involved in emergency medical services and out-of-hospital emergency medical care. It was organized in 1984 to represent physicians practicing in EMS.[4] NAEMSP describes its membership as including physicians, paramedics, nurses, administrators, educators, researchers, and other EMS personnel.[1]

History and activities

NAEMSP was formed in 1984 as a resource and advocacy organization for EMS physicians and EMS professionals.[1] A 2017 report by the National EMS Advisory Council listed NAEMSP's organization in 1984 among developments in the professionalization of emergency medical services in the United States.[4]

The association promotes educational meetings, publications, and other professional resources related to out-of-hospital emergency medical care. It also works with other organizations and federal agencies on EMS-related issues.[1] In 2020, NAEMSP was added to the First Responder Network Authority's Public Safety Advisory Committee to provide an EMS physician perspective on public-safety communications issues.[5]

Publications and guidance

NAEMSP publishes position statements and resource documents on EMS clinical practice, medical oversight, and policy topics.[6] Its position statements are commonly published in Prehospital Emergency Care; for example, a 2021 NAEMSP position statement on disaster response was published in that journal.[7]

Prehospital Emergency Care is a peer-reviewed journal published by Taylor & Francis. It is the official journal of NAEMSP, the National Association of State EMS Officials, the National Association of EMS Educators, the National EMS Management Association, the National Association of EMTs, and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.[3][8]

NAEMSP is also associated with Emergency Medical Services: Clinical Practice and Systems Oversight, a two-volume textbook used for EMS medical director education and preparation for the NAEMSP National EMS Medical Directors Course and Practicum.[9]
