Phil Stutz
Phil Stutz is an American author and psychiatrist [1]. He is known for his clientele, largely composed of actors, writers, agents, and executives in the entertainment business[2], as well as his self-help books. With fellow therapist Barry Michels, he is the co-author of the books The Tools (2012) [1] and Coming Alive (2017). He is also the author of Lessons for Living (2023) and True and False Magic (2025).
He is the subject of the Netflix documentary Stutz, which was produced by and stars his client, actor Jonah Hill.

Stutz grew up in a Jewish family.[3] in Manhattan, New York [1]
Education
Stutz earned a degree from the City College of New York.[4] before attending medical school at New York University in the 1960s [1]
Early Career
Stutz underwent training in psychiatry at the Metropolitan Hospital in New York, before spending multiple years serving as a prison psychiatrist at Rikers Island. He then opened a private therapy practice in his hometown of New York.
Personal life
Stutz is unmarried and lives in Los Angeles.[1], where he moved his practice in 1982[5]. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2005 [3]
