Refestramus (pronounced re-fes-TRA-mus) is an American progressive rock band based in Chicago, Illinois. Formed in May 2020 by drummer and songwriter Derek Ferguson, the band is signed to Melodic Revolution Records and has released three studio albums: Decoupage (2021), Intouríst (2024), and Morri's Rock Boutique (2026), all produced by Ian Beabout.[1][2]
History
Formation (2020–2021)
Refestramus was founded in May 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdowns by Derek Ferguson, a Chicago musician who had previously played keyboards on the local progressive rock scene in the early 1990s.[3] The band's name was coined by Ferguson's mother to mean "rearrange."[3] A brief indie incarnation of the project had appeared in 1989 before Ferguson set the idea aside to pursue a career in technology, during which he authored the books Mobile .NET and Broadband Internet Access for Dummies.[3] Ferguson's first collaborator on the revived project was multi-instrumentalist Ian Beabout of the band Colouratura, whom Ferguson had discovered through the internet radio program Prog Rock Deep Cuts. Beabout joined as co-producer, flutist, and vocalist, and would go on to produce all three Refestramus studio albums.[3][1] With professional studios closed during the pandemic, Ferguson subsequently assembled an international cast of additional collaborators through the freelance platform Fiverr, including Scottish vocalist Craig Cairns of the band Induction and Brazilian keyboardist Rogelio DeSouza.[3]
Decoupage (2021)
The debut album Decoupage was released in 2021. Exposé called it "a solid opening move."[4]
Intouríst (2024)
Intouríst, released by Melodic Revolution Records in 2024, marked the band's consolidation into a stable lineup. The album spent four consecutive months on the Relix/JamBands.com Radio Chart from July through October 2024, peaking at number 11 in August.[5][6][7][8] PROG Magazine described it as "a home-cooked slice of melody-rich prog" with "high-brow concepts and bizarre comedic turns,"[9] Progradar called it "an album of many delights,"[10] and Exposé called it "an excellent second effort from Refestramus."[11] The album included a Spanish-language version of the track "Asunción," written in response to airplay the band received on Radio Nacional del Paraguay in Asunción.[3]
Morri's Rock Boutique (2026)
The third album, Morri's Rock Boutique, was released by Melodic Revolution Records on March 6, 2026 (digital) and March 20, 2026 (CD). Guest performers included David Jackson of Van der Graaf Generator on saxophones, Joe Deninzon of Kansas and Stratospheerius on violin, Rick Witkowski of Crack the Sky on guitars, and Lynx of Old Blood on vocals.[1] Band members Dyanne Potter Voegtlin contributed keyboards and vocals, while Jan Christiana provided lead vocals, bass, and contributions to the arrangements; both are also members of Octarine Sky.[1] PROG Magazine described the album as "enjoyably vibrant and hooky,"[12] and Powerplay magazine awarded it 8/10, calling it "grown-up prog, full of great musicianship and songwriting."[13] Echoes and Dust described its sound as "a cinematic landscape with its surrealistic wonders, ghost-town amusement parks, and the haunting ghost that spooks the location."[14] In November 2025, Refestramus performed at the HRH Prog 15 festival in the United Kingdom, where Festivals For All described the band as "a superb Chicago band... almost Gong-esque."[15]
Musical style
Refestramus's music is described in promotional materials as progressive hard rock, with the band's record label citing Kansas, Styx, Van der Graaf Generator, Crack the Sky, and Flying Colors as comparable artists.[1] Reviewers have variously associated the band with Van der Graaf Generator and Gong.[15] The band's arrangements incorporate non-traditional rock instrumentation including accordion, viola, and Japanese instruments such as the shamisen, koto, and shakuhachi, alongside Mellotron and Hammond organ.[3] Lyrical and conceptual influences cited by Ferguson include Russian literature (notably Mikhail Bulgakov and Maxim Gorky), the films of Akira Kurosawa, the Orthodox Christian tradition, and the work of Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.[3]
