Ricardo Nuno Futre Pinheiro is a Portuguese jazz guitarist, composer, musicologist, and educator. His work combines performance, composition, and academic research in jazz studies, improvisation, and music performance. He has collaborated with numerous international jazz musicians and has published research on jazz historiography and improvisation practices.[1] [2]

Pinheiro is a professor at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (Lisbon School of Music), part of the Polytechnic University of Lisbon.

Early life and education

Pinheiro began studying guitar in Portugal and later pursued formal studies in jazz performance. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in music. He also holds a degree in psychological sciences from the University of Lisbon and a PhD in musicology (ethnomusicology) from NOVA University Lisbon.

During his studies he worked with jazz musicians and educators including Mick Goodrick, George Garzone, Ed Tomassi, Ken Pullig, Wayne Krantz, Ken Cervenka, Chris Washburne and ethnomusicologist Salwa Castelo-Branco.

Career

Performance and collaborations

As a guitarist and composer, Pinheiro has performed internationally and collaborated with numerous jazz musicians including Peter Erskine, David Liebman, Ivan Lins, Andy Sheppard, Luciana Souza, Norma Winstone, Chris Cheek, Jorge Rossy, Tim Hagans, Aaron Parks, Theo Bleckmann, Guinga, Mônica Salmaso, Jorge Helder, Andrew Rathbun, Michael Formanek, Aubrey Johnson, Vitorino, Maria João, Mário Laginha, Eric Ineke, Perico Sambeat, Stephan Astbury, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, the Remix Ensemble, Matt Renzi and Jon Irabagon.

His projects range from small-group jazz ensembles to collaborations that incorporate elements of chamber music and contemporary composition.

Academic career

Pinheiro teaches jazz guitar, jazz history and research methodology at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.

He is also a researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for the Study of Music and Dance (INET-md) at NOVA University Lisbon.

His academic work focuses on jazz historiography, improvisation and artistic research in music performance. [3] [4]

Pinheiro is the author of books on jazz practice and jam sessions:

Musical style

Critics have described Pinheiro's guitar playing as sensitive and imaginative, combining experimentation with traditional jazz language.[6] [7]
