Professor Richard John Harvey MBBS PhD, is an Australian otolaryngologist, rhinologist and skull base surgeon known for his contributions to the field of otolaryngology. He is a professor at Macquarie University and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and serves as the program head of Rhinology & Skull Base Surgery at the Applied Medical Research Center of UNSW. Professor Harvey has authored over 300 publications, books, and book chapters and has delivered more than 1000 lectures globally on sinonasal disease management.[1]

Early life and education

Professor Harvey completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with First Class Honours and a Bachelor of Science in Medicine (BSc(Med)) from the University of New South Wales in 1997. He earned his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery in 2005 and completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in trans-nasal skull base surgery at UNSW in 2015.[2]. Prof Harvey was made a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons [3] in 2024.

Career

Professor Harvey specializes in rhinology, allergy, and endoscopic skull base surgery. He practices at Macquarie University Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. He has held various academic appointments, including honorary professorships at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Medical Centre in Malaysia. He has served as president of the Australian and New Zealand Rhinologic Society (2021–2023) and the Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgeons (2020–2023). Additionally, he is the vice president of the Australian and New Zealand Skull Base Society.[4] Professor Harvey contributes to surgical education in Australia and throughout South-East Asia.[5]

Research and publications

Professor Harvey is an academic surgeon in rhinology, with a research focus on endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery. He has been ranked as the top Australian researcher in otolaryngology for several years by The Research Special Report of The Australian newspaper[6] and is included in Stanford’s list of the Top 2% of scientists in the world. [7] [8]. His research has contributed to the understanding of chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyps, and minimally invasive surgical techniques[9]. His H-index exceeds 70 and has accumulated more than 30,000 citations [10] and was admitted as member to the Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum in 2011.[11]

He served as editor-in-chief of The Australia Journal of Otolaryngology from 2014 to 2024[12], an associate editor for the Cochrane ENT Disorders Group and the editorial boards of the Rhinology Journal and other international medical journals.

Awards and honours

Professor Harvey has received several national awards for his contributions to otolaryngology, including the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery Medal for Distinguished Contribution to the Art and Science of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery [13], and the ESR Hughes Award from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.[14]
