Roy Mark Weller (Born 10 January 1997) is a British Social Media theorist and academic. He currently works at De Montfort University as a lecturer and has published several works in relation to social media and its ethical usage [3][1][2].
Early life
Weller was born in Northhampton, England, and moving to Leicester at an early age there he attended Gartree High School and Beauchamp College [1]. His father, Mark David Weller, was an analytical chemist (later salesperson) from Hertfordshire and made several television appearances on British Gameshows, including the first episode of Fifteen to One as well as appearances on The Krypton Factor and Masterteam [4][5]. His mother Margaret (Maggie) Weller is a retired clothing auditor and school teacher [2].
Education and career
Weller attended Gartree High School and Beauchamp College in Leicester [1]. In 2015 he got accepted on to attend De Montfort University to study Media Production BSc (Hons) and graduated with a first class honours in 2019 [6] [1]. After finishing his undergraduate degree, Weller was offered a position as a part time lecturer at De Montfort University as a Social Media lecturer, later being promoted to a Module leader [1][3]. He went on to study an MSc in Social Media by Independent study at De Montfort University, receiving a Distinction for his work [1][2]. This lead to him being offered a place as a Doctoral research student with the Media and Communication Research Centre under the supervision of Doctor Simon Mills and Professor Tracy Harwood, conducting research into Social Media ethics and the Sustainable Development Goals [7][8][1].
In May 2021 Weller is a TEDx speaker for De Montfort University on the theme of 'Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship' under the title "Are we Social Computers?" with a focus on humans being a part of an information network facilitated by mobile and digital technology [9][10]
