Sonari Hockey Club (SHC) is a prominent rural sports club based in Sonari village, Nohar Tehsil, Hanumangarh District, Rajasthan, India. The club focuses on promoting field hockey at the grassroots level, training young talent, and preparing players for state and national-level tournaments.

History

The village of Sonari has a rich culture of hockey. The growth of the club and the development of local players are credited to physical education teachers Samunder Singh Sihag, Dayaram Bhambhu, and hockey coach Sitaram Lalar and manoj khati

Achievements

State Level Dominance

The club's boys' and girls' teams across various age categories (Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19) have won multiple championships at the Rajasthan State Level.

  • Under-17 Girls Team (2023): In January 2023, the Under-17 girls' hockey team from Government Higher Secondary School, Sonari, won the "66th State Level Hockey Tournament" held in Kota. Player Ravina was named the 'Best Player' of the tournament. The team was managed by Samunder Singh Sihag, Sitaram Lalar and radheshyam lalr.[1]
  • Under-14 Team (Tibbi): At the 14-year district-level tournament held in Mirzawali Mer (Tibbi), the club's girls' team won the championship by defeating Khodan 2-0, while the boys' team also reached the finals.[2]

National Level Representation

  • Somnath Prabhakar & Prashant Memorial Hockey Tournament (2021): In October 2021, representing the Hanumangarh district, the club's team finished as runners-up in this national-level open tournament held in Alwar. The final match against Jaipur Hockey Club went to a penalty shootout (5-4). Key players included Manoj Khati, Rahul Mev, Rajesh Mev, Manish Barala, and Krishna Kumar. Following this, player Manish Barala went on to represent the state at the National level four times.[3]
  • Junior National Championship (2023): Club players Rajesh (son of Shyamlal Mev) and Manish (son of Jitendra Barala) were selected for the '13th Hockey India Junior National Championship' held at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha.[4]
  • National School Games (2023): In June 2023, goalkeeper Gurdas Bawri (son of Shrichand Bawri) was selected for the Rajasthan Under-19 team for the 66th National School Games Hockey Tournament in Gwalior. Previously, Pankaj Kumar (son of Sarjeet Khati) represented Rajasthan in the Sub-Junior National Hockey Tournament in Rourkela, Odisha.[5]

Employment and Government Jobs

Hockey has become a primary avenue for employment for the club's athletes. More than 25 players from Sonari Hockey Club have secured government jobs through the sports quota in various departments, including:
