Sabina Fati is a Romanian journalist, writer, and foreign policy analyst. She is currently a correspondent for Deutsche Welle. She has also worked for Radio Free Europe, România liberă, and Revista 22.
Education
Fati studied geodesy at the Institute of Civil Engineering in Bucharest, graduating in 1989.[1] She completed postgraduate studies in political science at the National School for Political Sciences and Administrative Studies, earning a degree in 1995.[1][2]
In 2004, she received a doctorate in history from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iași under the supervision of Professor Alexandru Zub.[1][2][3] Her dissertation examined Transylvanian political elites between 1892 and 1918.
Career
Fati began working in journalism in 1991 at the weekly newspaper Tinerama.[1] In 1993, she joined Mediafax press agency as an editor. From 1994, she worked as a correspondent for Radio Free Europe.[4]
Between 2006 and 2017, she was deputy editor-in-chief at România liberă.[5] She then served as deputy editor-in-chief at Revista 22 from 2017 to 2018.[6]
From 2018 to 2020, Fati was director of Radio Free Europe's Romanian department.[5][7] Since 2020, she has been a columnist for Deutsche Welle's Romanian service.[2][3]
From 2008 to 2015, she taught at the University of Bucharest's Department of Communication and Public Relations.[1][3]

- Călătorie pe urmele conflictelor de lângă noi: Kurdistan, Irak, Anatolia, Armenia, Humanitas, 2022[1]
- Cine râvnește la Gurile Dunării? O călătorie pe timp de război în Delta extinsă: Transnistria, Ucraina, Basarabia, România, Humanitas, 2024[1][8]
She has contributed to several collective volumes on Romanian politics and European security, including Romania in the Gray Zone: National and Regional Security in Eastern Europe after Madrid (2004) and Cum a rămas România fără președinte ales: 7 răspunsuri posibile (2025).[1]
Awards
Fati received the Lady Liberty Award from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in 2016.[4] In 2017, she received the "Romanian Women of Courage" Award from the U.S. Embassy in Romania.[9][10]
She received the Romulus Rusan Prize in 2024 from the Ana Blandiana & Romulus Rusan Foundation for Cine râvnește la Gurile Dunării?[11][12]
In 2025, she received the PEN Romania Award for the same book.[13][14] She was also nominated for the Monica Lovinescu Prize in 2025.[15]
