Samu/elle Striewski is a German queer activist, drag artist, and emerging scholar in philosophy and queer studies. They are the first non-binary person from Germany to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, funding their current postgraduate studies in political theory at the University of Oxford.[1] They have published on critical theory, particularly with respect to question of gender and sexuality.[2]
Early life and academic education
Samu/elle Striewski grew up in Wuppertal. While at school, they were elected to the Wuppertal Youth Council[3][4][5] and they served as the student body president.[6][7] In those positions, they engaged in projects to raise awareness about discrimination[8][9] and they had multiple public appearances as speaker and moderator alongside prominent local politicians, entrepreneurs, and public servants.[10][11][12] They received prizes in recognition of their social engagement,[13][14] and their academic performance.[15][16][17] In 2018, they graduated with the highest Abitur score ever recorded at their high school until then.[18][19] Their graduation speech was well-received and printed in the regional daily newspaper, Westdeutsche Zeitung.[20]
After a gap year, Striewski began studying mathematics, comparative literature, and philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin. Supported by scholarships from the Studienstiftung, Erasmus, and the DAAD, they spent one year in Paris (at the Sorbonne, Cité and Paris VIII) and another one in New York City (at Columbia University and The New School) where they studied with well-known left intellectuals like Nancy Fraser, Jack Halberstam, Axel Honneth, and Gayatri C. Spivak.[21] Upon their return to Germany, they started working at the Centre for Social Critique[22],[23] co-directed by Robin Celikates and Rahel Jaeggi, coordinating its social media appearance and conducting video interviews with invited scholars like Wendy Brown, Tommie Shelby, and Lea Ypi. Meanwhile, they continued their master in philosophy with a focus on feminist theory and social philosophy, taking classes with Manon Garcia and Sabine Hark (in Berlin), and Thomas Lemke, Christoph Menke, and Martin Saar (in Frankfurt). They co-founded a research colloquium for graduates working in the convergence of Critical Theory and post-structuralism,[24][25] and co-organized conferences on transfeminism and recognition, queer temporalities and genealogies, and Foucault.[26]
