Comment: This is submitted under WP:NPROF criterion 1 (significant impact in a scholarly discipline), which is an alternative to the GNG and does not require in-depth biographical coverage. The subject co-authored the monograph Probability Distributions on Banach Spaces (D. Reidel, 1987), a widely cited reference in probability on Banach spaces (~600 citations; ~800 across his work per Google Scholar/Semantic Scholar), and his rearrangement results are cited alongside those of Garsia, Maurey–Pisier and Kashin–Saakyan. Requesting assessment against NPROF rather than WP:BIO. ~2026-30143-09 (talk) 21:11, 21 May 2026 (UTC)

Sergei Akopovich Chobanyan (Armenian: Սերգեյ Հակոբի Չոբանյան; Russian: Сергей Акопович Чобанян; also known as Sergo Chobanyan; born 4 April 1942) is a Georgian-Armenian mathematician who works in functional analysis and probability theory. He is a Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1985) and a professor (1996), and is known for his work on probability distributions on Banach spaces and on the rearrangement of series in normed spaces.[1]
Biography
Chobanyan was born on 4 April 1942 in Tbilisi.[1] He graduated from Tbilisi State University in 1965, and from 1968 worked at the Institute of Computational Mathematics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (the N. Muskhelishvili Institute of Computational Mathematics, later incorporated into Georgian Technical University).[1][2] He served as a leading researcher there from 1989 to 2004, and from 2004 headed a department of the institute.[1] He earned the degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1985 and the title of professor in 1996.[1] His 70th birthday was marked in 2012 at the Third International Conference of the Georgian Mathematical Union in Batumi.[3]
According to the encyclopedia Who is Who: Armenians, Chobanyan is a cousin of the scientist and engineer Karapet Chobanyan and of Martun Chobanyan.[1]
Research
Chobanyan's research concerns functional analysis and probability theory.[1] Working on the rearrangement of summands in a normed space, he obtained a general maximal inequality, and he investigated the central limit theorem of probability theory in Banach spaces and stationary random processes in infinite-dimensional spaces.[1] In the theory of maximal inequalities for rearrangements of summands, his contributions are cited alongside those of Adriano Garsia, Bernard Maurey and Gilles Pisier, and Boris Kashin and A. Saakyan.[4] His later work, with Michigan State University collaborators, established conditions for the strong law of large numbers to hold under rearrangements of a sequence of random variables.[2]
He is a co-author, with Nicholas Vakhania and Vazha Tarieladze, of the monograph Probability Distributions on Banach Spaces, published in Russian by Nauka in 1985 and in an English translation by D. Reidel in 1987.[5][6]
