Sidney Eden was an American theatre producer and performer.

The Internet Broadway Database (IBDB) credits Eden as “Produced in association with” for the 1975 Broadway double bill Hughie / Duet, produced by Jay Julien.[1] For Hughie and Duet, Ben Gazzara received a 1975 Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play.[2]

Career

Chicago theatre

In May 1974, the Chicago Tribune column “Tower Ticker” referred to Eden as a producer and reported that he was “busy casting” When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder?.[3]

In October 1974, the Chicago Tribune reported on the Joseph Jefferson Awards and stated that Eden accepted awards on behalf of recipients, including an award for Ben Gazzara for Eugene O’Neill’s Hughie.[4]

A later scholarly article on the performance history of Hughie discusses a Chicago production connected with the First Chicago Center and places it in the context of touring productions of the play.[5]

Broadway

IBDB lists Eden as “Produced in association with” for the 1975 Broadway double bill Hughie / Duet.[1] Playbill’s production record for Hughie also lists Eden as “Produced in Association with”.[6]

A 1979 New York Times “Long Island Weekly” item about a Long Island production of Jay Broad’s A Conflict of Interest included a photograph caption identifying Eden among the cast.[7]

Film

The AFI Catalog of Feature Films credits Eden as “Instructor II” in The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1973).[8]

Actors’ Equity library donation

Actors’ Equity Association notes that the Ray Lonergan Memorial Library in Equity’s Chicago office grew to nearly 4,000 scripts and mentions a large donation from Eden.[9]
