The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) is a professional association for educators involved in family medicine. Founded in 1967, STFM is composed of physicians, nurse practitioners, residents, students, and other health professionals involved in family medicine education.[1] STFM is one of several organizations representing academic family medicine in the United States.
STFM publishes the peer reviewed journals Family Medicine and PRiMER (Peer-reviewed Reports in Medical Education Research) and is a contributor to the Annals of Family Medicine, a bimonthly medical journal established in 2003.
History
STFM was established in 1967 by medical educators seeking to create a national organization focused on family medicine education.[2] STFM was formed during a period where family medicine was emerging as a distinct academic discipline within U.S. medical education.[3] Early growth of the organization occurred alongside broader effects to define family medicine as an academic field with " a coherent educational mission."[4] The organization adopted its bylaws in 1968 and held its first independent annual meeting in 1976.[5]
During the 1970s and 1980s, STFM began developing conferences, educational programs, and scholarly publications.[6] It also began holding national educational meetings that supported faculty development in family medicine residency programs[7]. In February 1972, STFM was admitted to membership in the Council of Academic Societies (CAS)[8] under AAMC[9]. STFM continued to conduct educational sessions in conjunction with the American Medical Association's Congress on Medical Education[10]. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s STFM broadened its collaborations with other organizations involved in family medicine education and research. It became a partner in several national initiatives such as the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA)[11] and the Academic Academy of Family Physicians.[12] In September 1986, the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) joined STFM as a co-sponsor of Family Medicine, and in March 1987, Family Medicine was accepted for indexing in Index Medicus.[13]
During the 2000s and 2010s, the organization expanded its digital educational resources and fellowship programs. In 2014, STFM joined six other family medicine organizations to launch Family Medicine for America's Health.[14] It also collaborated with the Association of Departments of Family Medicine[15], the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors[16], and the North American Primary Care Research Group[17] to formally launch the Council of Academic Family Medicine (CAFM)[18].[19]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, STFM temporarily transitioned its conferences to virtual formats before returning to in-person meetings.[20] STFM has participated in national collaborative efforts to "define competencies for residency training in family medicine and related specialties." [21] [22]
Since then, STFM has introduced educational resources related to telemedicine[23], point of care ultrasound[24], and artificial intelligence in primary care education[25].
