Sung Hwan Kim (born 1975 in Seoul, Korea) is a contemporary artist working across video, performance, installation, drawing, sound, writing, and publishing. He is also a producer, and educator. Since 2019, he has been based in Hawaiʻi, where he has developed A Record of Drifting Across the Sea (2017–), an ongoing film and installation series examining histories of Korean migration to Hawaiʻi and their intersections with Indigenous and migrant communities.[1]

Kim's work has been the subject of monographic and critical studies, including Janine Armin's Sung Hwan Kim: A Record of Drifting Across the Sea (2025)[2], and has been discussed in publications such as Artforum [3][4][5], Frieze[6][7][8], ArtAsiaPacific[9][10], and Afterall[11]. His mid-career survey was presented at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2023–24)[12], and ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (2024–25)[13], and is scheduled to travel to Bergen Kunsthall in 2026. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York[14], Tate Modern[15], the Seoul Museum of Art[16], the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, daadgalerie, and international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale[17], Gwangju Biennale, Busan Biennale, and Hawaiʻi Triennial[18].

Kim received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2021[19] and participated in the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program in 2015[20]. He also received the Karl Sczuka Förderpreis (2010)[21], Prix de Rome (second prize, 2007), and the Hermès Korea Missulsang (2007).
