The 2026 Sreenidhi University TG20 (officially Sreenidhi University TG20, Season 1) is the inaugural edition of the TG20, a Twenty20 franchise cricket league administered by the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) and held under the aegis of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).[1] The tournament is contested by eight regional franchises representing different districts of Telangana and is being played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad, from 21 June to 11 July 2026.[2] The competition features 32 matches across a 21-day window, with the top four sides advancing to an IPL-style four-team playoff.[3]
Background
The TG20 was formally conceived and announced by the Hyderabad Cricket Association on 29 April 2026.[4] HCA Secretary M. Jeevan Reddy confirmed that the BCCI Secretary, Devajit Saikia, communicated formal approval to the HCA on 6 May 2026.[5] The league is designed to create a professional pathway for cricketers from across Telangana, a state that has produced India internationals including Tilak Varma, Mohammed Siraj, Ambati Rayudu, Mohammad Azharuddin and VVS Laxman.[6]
The HCA released an Expression of Interest (EOI) for franchise ownership in April 2026, with a minimum bid price set at ₹3 crore.[7] The HCA's event-management partner is TCM Sports Management Pvt Ltd. The tournament's brand ambassador is actor Vijay Deverakonda.[8]
A rival body, the Telangana Cricket Association (TCA), publicly contested the legitimacy of the league, issuing legal notices to several players and officials and alleging the tournament had not received the required BCCI approvals under BCCI Rule 28.[9] The HCA rebutted these claims, citing written communication from the BCCI Secretary dated 6 May 2026 as evidence of approval, and noted that a BCCI General Manager–Cricket Operations email of 26 May 2026 reconfirmed the same.[10]
Administration
The league is administered through two governance bodies.[11]
The HCA Apex Council provides strategic direction and regulatory oversight for cricket in Telangana. Its members are:[12]
- Acting President: Daljeet Singh
- Secretary: M. Jeevan Reddy
- Joint Secretary: T. Baswa Raju
- Treasurer: T. Anil Kumar
- Councillor: Sunil Agarwal
- CEO: Imtiaz Khan
The TG20 Governing Council oversees all commercial and operational aspects of the league, including franchise relations, broadcast rights, sponsorships, and event management. Its members are:[13]
- Chairman: V. Agam Rao
- Members: C. Sanjeev Reddy, M. Jeevan Reddy, Dr. K. Anil Kumar, Parth Satwalkar, Imtiaz Khan (ex-officio)
The Executive Head of the TG20 is Prasanna Kannan, formerly CEO of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).[14] Former India international Ambati Rayudu serves as Chairman of the HCA's Cricket Operations Committee.[15]
Teams
Eight franchises representing different regions of Telangana compete in the inaugural edition. The teams were allocated through a competitive franchise auction held on 23 May 2026, with bidders securing their preferred district in descending order of bid value.[16]

Tournament format
The 2026 TG20 season uses a single round-robin league format across eight teams, with each franchise playing seven matches (28 league-stage matches in total). The top four teams at the conclusion of the league stage advance to an IPL-style four-team playoff consisting of Qualifier 1, an Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final.[17]
The points system is: win = 2 points; no result or tie = 1 point each; loss = 0 points. Net run rate (NRR) is the primary tiebreaker where teams finish level on points, with head-to-head record as the secondary tiebreaker.[18] There is no Impact Player or bonus-point system in the inaugural season. A Super Over is used only in knockout matches. The league stage runs from 21 June to 7 July 2026, the playoffs from 8 to 10 July, and the Final is on 11 July 2026.[19]
Venue
All 32 matches of the 2026 TG20 are staged at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad, the home ground of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.[20] The ground has a capacity of approximately 55,000 spectators and has hosted international matches including ICC events.[21] Hosting the entire season at a single venue gives the league a unified identity and ensures consistent playing conditions for all franchises. Afternoon matches begin at 14:15 IST and evening fixtures at 19:15 IST.
Broadcasting
The 2026 TG20 is broadcast live on Star Sports (including Star Sports 2 and Star Sports 2 Telugu) and streamed live on JioHotstar (app, web, and connected TV).[22] The radio partner is Red FM.[23] The player auction on 7 June 2026 was also streamed live on JioHotstar.[24]

Player auction
The TG20 player auction was held on 7 June 2026 at the Princess Convention Centre, Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, and was conducted by veteran sports presenter Charu Sharma.[26] A pool of over 1,300 HCA-registered cricketers was registered for the auction, from which 160 players were sold across eight franchises.[27]
Each franchise was allocated a purse of ₹60 lakh, with a minimum mandatory spend of ₹54 lakh, and could build squads of up to 20 players.[28] Players were categorised across six tiers—Icon (base ₹5 lakh), A+ (₹4 lakh), A (₹3 lakh), B (₹2 lakh), C1 (₹1 lakh), and C2 (₹75,000).[29] Each squad is required to include at least four district-level cricketers, with a minimum of two in every playing XI.[30] The eight franchises collectively spent ₹474.45 lakh during the auction.[31]
