Yoichi Aoyagi (青柳 陽一, Aoyagi Yōichi, October 12, 1938 – January 15, 2026) was a Japanese photographer best known for the "Apple Nude" (りんごヌード), a photograph of Nami Asada taken on December 24, 1972, that became one of the most iconic images in Japanese publishing history.[1][2] Over a five-decade career, he worked as a commercial photographer for major Japanese brands, published more than a dozen photo books, and maintained an archive of over 10,000 negatives from his collaborations with Nami Asada.[2]

Early life and education

Aoyagi was born on October 12, 1938, in Date-Hobara, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.[3] Raised in Hiroshima Prefecture, he attended Shudo Academy in Hiroshima City for high school.[4]

After graduating, he moved to Tokyo and enrolled in the photography department of Tama Art University's affiliated arts academy. While still a student, he became an assistant at the studio of photographer Takashi Kijima.[5] He graduated in 1962 and went freelance the same year, winning the first Japan Advertising Photographers' Association Encouragement Award.[3]

Career

Commercial photography

Aoyagi built a career in advertising and magazine photography during the postwar Japanese economic boom. His clients included Mazda, Mitsubishi, Bridgestone, and Suntory.[6][4] In 1967, he held his debut exhibition, "My Girls," at the Ginza Fuji Photo Salon.[3]

The Nami Asada archive

In September 1972, 18-year-old Nami Asada was brought to Aoyagi's studio by her mother, who wanted nude photographs taken as a record of her daughter's youth.[1][7] Aoyagi conducted test shoots over several months before the first publication in Heibon Punch on January 29, 1973.[8][9] The apple nude — shot on December 24, 1972,[8][10] and published in the March 12, 1973 issue — made both Nami Asada and Aoyagi nationally famous.[9] The issue sold over one million copies and the image was released as a standalone poster.[11][12]

Aoyagi shot Nami Asada exclusively for Heibon Punch for five years (1973–1978), producing over 10,000 negatives.[9][7] He described his technique as using knitwear as a warm-up to relax the model before undressing, a method he called an expression of chirarism (チラリズム) — the aesthetic of partial visibility.[2] He also stated that aside from adjusting her hair, he never touched Nami Asada during their sessions.[1]

Later work

Aoyagi's later editorial and commercial work included photographing Hawaiian model Agnes Lum for a photo book, and collaborating with novelist Ken Kaiko on Kawa wa Nemuranai (The River Doesn't Sleep).[3][4] He also planned and photographed a cookbook for Princess Noriko of Mikasa.[4]

In 2004, Aoyagi left Tokyo and returned to his hometown of Date, Fukushima, to care for his chronically ill wife.[13] During his caregiving years, he continued to publish photo books from the Nami Asada archive. Beginning in 2000, a series of ten volumes were released — initially by Aspect, then Kodansha, Magazine House, and finally Shogakukan — including the five-volume Memories of Apple series (2014–2024).[9]

In July 2021, he established the "Yoichi Aoyagi Photography School" (一般社団法人青柳陽一写真学校) in the former Oeda Elementary School building in Yanagawa, Fukushima, funded in part by a READYFOR campaign that raised ¥4,026,000 from 96 supporters.[13][14] The school was dissolved on July 18, 2024.[15]

In April 2019, Aoyagi photographed Nami Asada for the first time in decades — portraits taken in Date City and Iizaka Onsen, when she was 65 years old. These were published in 2024 as part of Memories of Apple Vol. 5: Final Cut.[9]

Death and memorial

Aoyagi died suddenly on January 15, 2026, at age 87 (88 in Japanese traditional reckoning).[15] His funeral was held on January 20 in Yanagawa, Fukushima, attended by his three daughters, relatives, and friends.[15] His funeral portrait was a candid photograph taken by his close friend, contrabassist Toru Takahashi, at Erfurt Airport in 1997.[16]

A memorial chamber music concert — Schubert's Death and the Maiden — was held at Fukushima City Music Hall on April 23, 2026, performed by the KAMMERENSEMBLE Berlin-Tokio. Aoyagi had loved Schubert's music for over 70 years.[17]

Personal life

Aoyagi married and had three daughters.[15] His wife suffered from a chronic illness that required over 20 years of nursing care, which Aoyagi provided from 2004 until his death.[13]

He was an avid fisherman and maintained a long friendship with novelist Ken Kaiko, whom he met through their shared interest in fishing.[4] He owned a 1971 Suzuki Jimny LJ20, which he kept for over 50 years, and collected edible salts from his travels around the world.[15]

Legacy

Aoyagi's archive of Nami Asada — 10,000+ negatives spanning five years — represents one of the largest known bodies of work dedicated to a single gravure model in Japanese publishing history.[9] His knitwear technique and "chirarism" aesthetic have been cited as influential in the development of Japanese gravure idol photography.[2]

The apple nude has been described as one of the most iconic photographs in Japanese publishing history,[11] and Aoyagi's decision to preserve the uncensored negatives for 27 years — waiting for the legal window to open after Japan's pubic hair ban eased — has been noted as an act of deliberate archiving.[1]
