Island Lake is a village in Lake and McHenry counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. Per the 2020 census, the population was 8,051.[4] The village surrounds Island Lake, a lake which contains a small island.

History

The village was incorporated on June 25, 1952.[5]

Geography

Island Lake is a village lying in the northwest Chicago suburbs.

According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Island Lake has a total area of 3.56 square miles (9.22 km2), of which 3.35 square miles (8.68 km2) (or 94.07%) is land and 0.21 square miles (0.54 km2) (or 5.93%) is water.[6]

2020 census

As of the 2020 census, Island Lake had a population of 8,051, with 3,116 households and 2,053 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,261.52 inhabitants per square mile (873.18/km2). There were 3,232 housing units at an average density of 907.87 per square mile (350.53/km2).[11][12][13]

The median age was 41.3 years. 21.1% of residents were under the age of 18 and 12.2% were 65 years of age or older. The age distribution also included 7.5% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, and 30.8% from 45 to 64. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 98.0 males age 18 and over.[11][12]

99.7% of residents lived in urban areas, while 0.3% lived in rural areas.[13]

Of the 3,116 households, 31.0% had children under the age of 18 living in them. 52.2% were married-couple households, 17.4% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 22.6% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.16 and the average family size was 2.68.[11][12]

Of the 3,232 housing units, 3.6% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.7% and the rental vacancy rate was 3.7%.[11][12]

Income and poverty

The median income for a household in the village was $83,970, and the median income for a family was $95,087. Males had a median income of $54,050 versus $36,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $35,714. About 5.5% of families and 8.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.7% of those under age 18 and 9.4% of those age 65 or over.
